Draconian Guppy
Nice! A lotta work for keeping NSFW woot! But I agree, this is going an extra mile, it should be up to the user, you are taking your own risk by reading teh non technical forums... But oh well, Cheers for teh Neowinz! +Frank B. Subscriber² Posted April 12, 2010 Subscriber² Share Posted April 12, 2010 Nice idea, but tell me again why you would be on a forum at work, wastin companies money and time? Neowin is a tech forum at its core. There are a lot of solutions to common IT issues already posted, and questions about new issues are usually quickly answered. DaveLegg Developer Posted April 22, 2010 Developer Share Posted April 22, 2010 You know what would be a good idea? If it were possible to setup say some IP addresses for the more techy folks and have the site automatically enable and disable it based on where you are. EG - - my home IP is 74.xxx.xxx.xxx if i log in from that IP address then Neowin should be able to see that automatically disable the "Work" filter. - my work IP is 218.xxx.xxx.xxx (i think gotta double check ) - this is a big corp (worldwide big) so their IP never changes. Now you might say it will affect everyone at that job (well technically it should! no NSFW stuff at work!!) but i guess it should be possible to set it up that only X user and X IP address does it? With Windows 7 being somewhat location aware (professional and up) - i figured Neowin could do that too Anyways, might be too much work and may cause issues on the server which we don't want. This is still a good idea as it's implemented currently however! It is something we thought about doing, but it raises a lot of questions such as how would we ensure the person requesting the setting for an ip range actually has the right to do so. I dont think people would be happy if Joe User at their company requested we enable the setting for the entire ip block for the company. There would be so much administration overhead in this, its just not viable. It's a lot easier for us to trust the common sense of users to enable it themselves if they think it is needed. Ferret
Excellent news. I've just started a new job where i'll be able to browse the internet at work, rather than using my phone - So this is one feature I will definatly be using. One other idea for that IP address suggestion - Can you add 2 boxes, where people can input their own IP's for changing the setting ? I'll try and explain that better.... Location 1: Home IP (83.xx.xx.xxx) Location 2: Work IP (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) Because I use a static IP address at home, and my company also use's a static IP address (Won't be much use to people with dynamic IP's).... So rather than Neowin finding our IP, and selecting the correct setting, we set it our selves ! Does that make sense, or am I just rambling on ? Thanks again guys :)

Ferret
Nice idea, but tell me again why you would be on a forum at work, wastin companies money and time? The nature of my job gives me 45mins between doing 15mins work. So i'm not wasting company money, i'm just passing time !

Roger H. Veteran Posted April 24, 2010 Veteran Share Posted April 24, 2010 Hey Dave, i wasn't saying automatically do it for X range of IP addresses. If you did it that way then it would affect everyone who visits Neowin from that IP address. That would also suck for people sharing IP addresses, imagine 2 brothers at the same house. What i meant was, you log in and the server goes, Oh, DaveLegg is at "Work" (since the IP address is in that range that was previously specified) so i'll turn off NSFW stuff. When Dave goes home, server goes - "Dave is home, yay! NSFW FTW!" :D That's why i said it might be too complicated cuz then each user account would have options for that. It's probably better to have 2 work locations but treat everywhere else as "Home" so don't even need an setting for that. I say 2 options for Work so you can set somewhere else (other branch or even coffee shop you frequent) as another NSFW area. Nobody wants to be that creepy guy looking at porn in Panera Bread or Starbucks. LOL

So rather than Neowin finding our IP, and selecting the correct setting, we set it our selves ! Does that make sense, or am I just rambling on ? Thanks again guys :) The setting is cookie based, so if you log in at work with the "I'm at work" setting, when you go home and view Neowin, you won't be on the "I'm at work" setting if you didn't enable it there.. I think this is better so that people won't need to go back and forth on the setting all the time. The other explanation for people wanting to put IP address blocks in, this will never be possible, due to potential misuse of the feature. We have effectively given the members the responsibility here, which in most cases is valid for the workplace (ie: you wouldn't willingly browse porn sites at work, unless you want to lose your job). red.
Great feature and glad that you implemented it using cookies so that i don't have to disable it at home. Also, does the 'i'm at work' feature disable avatars? That's one of the things that i tend to block at work but not at home.
