It's behaving again...

In OpenDesires camera mode, how do you change the resolution of pictures? pinch.gif

Thanks

Press the icon that kinda looks like a power button and scroll the speech bubble like box all the way down, its like the third last options

Went back to MoDaCo, OpenDesire is too distanced from HTC/Sense.

I've got everything up and running how I want though :)

What's a good SMS replacement? I've heard handcent and chompSMS (which I believe is by the bitesms guys from iPhone who do a great job).

I just installed ChompSMS, not very good :( when I opened it it just dimmed my screen down (strange because its at the lowest brightness) and froze.

Could still use the Home button to get back but.

The thing that annoyed me the most about having another messaging app as I would get 2 alerts, one from the android messaging app, and another from the replacement app.

Is there an app to play music/movies stored in a separate HDD connected to Windows 7 machine over network
Well, I can remote play/stream music from my WHS box using eStrong File Explorer, so give that a shot.

So turn off notifications from the default SMS app.

Maybe out of place but have to ask,

BTW just got my Desire yesterday

Is there an app to play music/movies stored in a separate HDD connected to Windows 7 machine over network

i am already playing the videos/ music through WDTV Live so just thought if I can do the same on my phone as well

GMote works nicely for my for streaming from my laptop onto phone!

OpenDesire 4.0 for me :) great batterylife when running them in conjuction with SetCPU.

Also got into the Whatsapp BETA program today :)

Audio - For SMS I use Handcent, biggest plus for me of it is that you can have the screen 'wake up' on receiving a text. Something so simple in Windows Mobile but seems to be missing on Android.

All this with flashing this and that.

I will be happy to leave it as it is when I purchase mine (Y)

For those in the UK, look at Sim Only deals. Works out if I go with o2's Sim only (for smart phones) at £15/12 month contract then I will save £49 (if I take the contact up to the 18 months). If I only had the contract for the 12 months, then I would save a whopping £139 - that is buying the handset at £400 for both. In 12 months should you wish to sell it, I suspect you would see a good return on the handset too.

Ok, I really want to root my phone, but I have a few doubts and fears. And I am a complete beginner when it comes to flashing Android phones. sad.gif Although I have flashed countless ROM's on my HTC Diamond and Touch HD. biggrin.gif

Here goes.....

HTC Desire

Android 2.2 - Stock WWE ROM

PC: Windows 7 x64

Which is the easiest way to root?

Will it be possible to root even though I am running Froyo?

If yes, how do I go about the whole process

Which is the best ROM in terms of speed, stability, and being as close to stock as possible?

Which ROM has all of the above, and includes the Sense UI?

Is it possible to backup all my apps and settings in the stock ROM and then put it back on the custom ROM?

Contacts: Google; Text messages: SMS Backup & Restore; Apps: Titanium Backup....am I right so far?

Does a nandroid backup really backup EVERYTHING?

If I want to go back to stock completely in the future, including the phone being unrooted, will it be possible?

I think that's about it....have I missed out anything I need to be aware of or do?

Thanks!! smile.gif

Well, I have just completed my list of current deals (from online lists) for the UK:

** Prices in brackets are based on bringing the 12 months up to 18 months

If you click on REPLY, then look down at the thread below the replying box, the figures will line up

Can't be bothered to edit it more so they line up in the thread

O2 seems to be the best deal.

@Spoon: No Orange? Also, check O2 AUP/FUP, no way is that "truly" unlimited.

Which is the easiest way to root?
Unrevoked.
Will it be possible to root even though I am running Froyo?
Depends on your HBOOT version, you might need to downgrade your HBOOT first, and then use Unrevoked.
If yes, how do I go about the whole process?
Unrevoked, one click root program.
Which is the best ROM in terms of speed, stability, and being as close to stock as possible?
In terms of being close as to stock Android (sans Sense UI) OpenDesire (IMO).
Which ROM has all of the above, and includes the Sense UI?
Again IMO, LeeDroid v2.0.
Is it possible to backup all my apps and settings in the stock ROM and then put it back on the custom ROM?
Yes.
Contacts: Google; Text messages: SMS Backup & Restore; Apps: Titanium Backup....am I right so far?
Yes.
Does a nandroid backup really backup EVERYTHING?
Yes.
If I want to go back to stock completely in the future, including the phone being unrooted, will it be possible?
Depends on if your current network provider has a full RUU out that you can flash back to.

I'm probably gonna take the LeeDroid v2.0a ROM as a base and cook/bake my own ROM. Mostly to remove the Sense stuff, I prefer LauncherPro.

The only thing I changed was the theme, I put Dr.Droidversion B&W from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=760936

I actually like the sense stuff and I also have good speeds when I run Quadrant. Battery life is excellent, on my old ROM (2.1 Apps2SD) I would lose around 10% of battery during the night, so far it's only 2%.

@The Guradian, what Singh400 said  Revoked is the easiest way.

All this with flashing this and that.

I will be happy to leave it as it is when I purchase mine

I give it a month

I give it less time, there really are advatages to rooting and using customs ROMs, e.g. speed, battery life, more functions and as it's so easy to do why not try?

Ok, I just spent almost the whole day today with phase 1 of using a custom ROM on my Desire, downgrading HBOOT.

NO LUCK.....

My HBOOT version is 0.92

I have a unbranded and unlocked handset (bought it that way). The only thing I did was flash a generic WWE ROM as mine came with an Asia ROM. I had created a gold card that time, but later found that I needn't have.

Anyway, I downloaded a PB99IMG.zip file that was needed according to instructions on XDA. I put that file on the root of my gold card and booted the phone in to recovery mode. But after it loads and verifies the image, it says something like Main version older than final, update failed.mad.gif

I then put the same image on a normal card and tried, this time it showed a CID error.realmad.gif

What do I do??

Please help!!

What type of screen do you have SLCD or AMOLED? This can make a difference. There is no real way to check, but alot of people who have 0.92 HBOOT have a SLCD screen, and you need a slightly different image for that.

Keep trawling through the threads at XDA.

@Spoon: No Orange? Also, check O2 AUP/FUP, no way is that "truly" unlimited.

No, no Orange as they are just not that great :p

The unlimited internet is limited but they have unlimited Wi-Fi whereas Vodafone will charge you after your free use.

I'll see when I eventually get one. It probably won't be until late September or even up to November anyway as my contract isn't due until February which means I can upgrade in November or hopefully be bought out then ;)

ALL DONE!!!! FINALLY!!!!

Running LeeDroid Mod 2.0a!! yes.gifyes.gifstar.gifstar.gifstar.gifstar.gifstar.gif

Found a utility on XDA that automates the whole process of downgrading HBOOT, installing Eclair, fixing partition errors (if any), etc! smile.gifsmile.gif

After that it was Unrevoked with AmonRA-->Nandroid-->Radio-->ROM!! w00t.gif

Is it possible to remove apps that are installed by the ROM? There are a couple of things I want to remove, like Android contacts, dialer etc. I prefer the HTC variants.

Congratulations on rooting :)

That's a good question about removing stock apps, I'll let you know if I find time later today to try.

Link? I assume my Desire will be LCD so will also need downgrading.

Here ya go! Check the box in which it came. If the specs say touch sensitive screen, then it is an SLCD. If it says AMOLED touch sens...... then it is obviously AMOLED.

    • Keep in mind Intuit has lobbied like crazy to keep taxes complicated so they can continue to sell tax software. They also got caught hiding their legally mandated free version so they could release a second one that pushed countless people into charges they didn't need to pay to file. Intuit leads the charge on inventing problems so they can sell you the solution and disrespecting you in the process.
