[UK] iPhone 4 Handset Prices Announced PAYG

Recommended Posts

Massive LOL @ the Apple crew trying to justify this ridiculous price. By all means go ahead and waste your money. There is no doubt the I4 is a nice bit of kit, but it isn’t worth that much at all. I’ll take my Desire any day thanks.

Considering I can still sell my 3g for around £185 to Mazuma, It's not that bad. I doubt next years iphone upgrade will be massive I don't really have an issue with the price.

It seems the iPhone 4 will be SIM-free meaning you can use any UK provider with it :) I've ordered one.

I don't think it means that at all, I'm pretty certain it means it'll be unlocked for O2, Orange, Voda and Tesco.

Carriers like T-Mobile, 3 etc etc are still locked out.

Could be wrong though.

Apple iPhone 4 FAQ

  • Does iPhone work with any SIM card or carrier worldwide?
iPhone 3GS works with SIM cards and iPhone 4 works with micro-SIM cards from compatible carriers, including prepaid cards. Non-GSM carrier networks do not support iPhone. Availability of 3G data depends on carrier support for the radio frequencies used by iPhone.

  • Where can I get a SIM or micro-SIM card?
You can get a SIM or micro-SIM card from any carrier offering iPhone plans.
    View a list of carriers.

  • How do I get started using iPhone to place and receive calls?
First, insert an activated SIM or micro-SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then connect your iPhone to your computer and open iTunes to complete set up.

  • Do I need an iPhone-specific service plan?
iPhone may require large amounts of data usage. Please contact your carrier to ensure that you have an appropriate service plan to support iPhone.

  • Do I need to commit to a long-term contract for my iPhone?
Buying a SIM-free iPhone from the Apple Online Store allows you choose your own carrier and change carriers at any time. iPhone may also be available at a reduced initial price with a contract directly from your wireless carrier.

  • Does iPhone support tethering?
Yes. You can share the fast 3G connection on your iPhone with your Mac or PC and connect to the Internet from just about anywhere ? no Wi-Fi required. Contact your carrier for details.

  • Are iPhone 4 and iPad micro-SIM cards interchangeable?
No. Your iPad micro-SIM card will not work with your iPhone.

  • Will all iPhone features work with my carrier?
Visual Voicemail requires carrier support and may not function on your carrier's network. Please read this Support article or contact your carrier for more details.

  • Why does the price of iPhone from the Apple Online Store differ from its price from a carrier?
Carriers typically sell the iPhone with a contract that subsidizes the initial purchase price of the phone. By purchasing your iPhone without a contract, you can use any SIM or micro-SIM card from a compatible carrier, including your current one.

  • Can I use my iPhone outside my home country?
Yes. iPhone is enabled to work on carrier networks using GSM around the world. Because the iPhone sold by the Apple Online Store is SIM-free, you can purchase a SIM or micro-SIM card and service from a local carrier at your destination. Or check with your home carrier regarding international roaming charges.

  • If I buy iPhone from this Apple Online Store, can I ship it to another country?
No. Orders placed through this Apple Online Store can be shipped only within the country of purchase. You can also shop for friends and family in countries where iPhone is sold. Just visit the local store of the country where you want your products delivered. Or for fast, easy ordering and expert advice, just call an Apple Online Store specialist at 0800 048 0408.

Seems that it will work with any carrier worldwide.

I said to myself this morning that I'd go straight for it if the cheapest one was ?400, at ?450 I'd have to think long and hard about it. ?500 is an insane amount to spend on a phone. Unless O2 have a better deal for existing PAYG customers (which I can't see happening) then I'm out :/

Why do people feel the need to come in Apple threads and insult users all the time? I don't want any other phone, I'm fine with the price and I have the money to pay for it, So get over it.

Because Apple have such a big impact on others too.

If people pay this for the iPhone then it filters through to other devices. You pay more than it's worth for an iPhone then carriers start charging more for other devices because people will pay it.

Apple use their cult like status and "magic" to make people think that their devices are better than the rest in every way and that they have invented everything. They tell people what they do and no not need and people believe it - if theres no demand for it because people believe they don't need it then other manufacturers will not produce it because there's seemingly no demand for it.

I do not want Apple and Steven Jobs deciding what is best for me, especially when I need something which I can be productive with. Apple are putting more effort into expensive toys that productive devices nowadays because people lap them up. I've heard so many people say they want to buy an iPad because "they must be good" - simply because they're made by Apple and have a lot of hype around them. These people aren't even aware what the iPad is capable of, they just want one because Apple say so.

My mate phoned O2 earlier to get some help with his phone, but while he talked to him he asked a few Q's.

There will be a P&G iPhone 4 but only on Orange & O2 apparently, so no doubt we'll see a lower priced handset than £500.

Also, for anyone else on Simplicity per month / 12 month, your unlimited data will be safe for as long as you keep the contract :D

Edit: my bad on the unlock thing, but it's still cheaper to buy an iPhone 4 from O2 & unlock it for free (when they are available obv). Save the £50

Ah sweet, good to hear :D

Slightly OT but can anyone recommend anywhere to sell/trade in my phone? 16GB black iPhone 3G in great condition, boxed with all the stuff...just trying to work out how much extra I'll have to pay for this new one.

These prices are ridiculous, at least the Americans get them at a half reasonable price.

You can either pay a huge premium and ?30 per month for an iPhone 4, or get the HTC Desire for FREE for ?30 per month.

I know which I'd choose to be honest.

Agreed. So ridiculous I am looking at the SE W995 which has everything I need (Wi-Fi, A-GPS, 3G etc) for a snip at ?180. I was given an iPhone 3GS and to be totally honest I was very dissapointed with it, even more so if I had actually parted money to buy the thing, never again.

I don't see it being cheaper myself. That and last time o2 held back the 3gs stock they had for contract customers. Payandgo was "out of stock" for months even tho there is no difference in the box between payandgo and contract, they just send a separate letter with the sim on it.

hope your right tho, I'd cancel my apple order if o2 offered it cheaper

I can't see O2 offering them for ?450 on PAYG. They'll be ?499 the same as Apple. They can't subsidize the phone on PAYG.

Mazuma are still offering ?185 cash for it or ?200 odd argos vouchers. I can't be bothered with Ebay myself since they take such a massive cut on it.

The iphone 3gs was my first and last Apple product. I've only had it 6 months and must admit I was brain washed in to it with mates/ads The only good thing ab out it. at the time, was the smooth interface. But Android has caught up, at least on the HTC Desire.

I'm not liking Apples polices, but stuck with the phone for 18 more months :(

I got my Desire for ?129 on a ?15/month contract with 300 minutes, unlimited texts and 3GB of data on T-Mobile when it was first released.

HAHA, Anyone who buys this is getting ripped off.

Thing is no way does the desire look as good as the new iPhone.. ok I know thats a bit vain but still.

    • I agree, especially if it is cloud sourced, like this one is.. but I wouldn't say no to a local AI assistant similar to the Zettlab one which would be really helpful with my large Photos library, but also to perform tasks like installing Docker apps rather than me having to do it via Docker Compose, but I don't think we're quite there yet. Synology Photos is somewhat AI, you can ask it to search for certain people (if you have tagged them and it will attempt to match similar photos to the person) and if you put a search term in for "cars" for example, it will show you all photos with a car.
    • I doubt that Google will keep the same price... it may go up from that list published.

    • So the card is targeted at headphone users - so the review should be from someone that uses this - maybe I can review a card next time.
