Windows Live Essentials 'beta' out now!

Recommended Posts

I think that is a bug, it was in the leaked build, the only way i could was going through my Windows Live profile.

On another note i started the installation at 9pm, and it's still going, its currently at 64%, not sure wots taking so long

Maybe its downloading? just very very slowly?

One-way webcam conversations are still not possible, grrrr.

They aren't?

Uninstalled. I wanted to have a look at where they are going with this, and I don't particularly like it. The constant use of live.com is annoying to say the least. The Facebook integration is a half-baked attempt (I understand it's beta, but give us something to test please?). I've gone back to 14. Messenger Discovery can at least connect to FB chat, so I'll stick with that.

They have settings within the application as well. Why replicate settings which cover the whole of Windows Live within the app? It makes more sense to have a central place to change the same settings no matter where you are on Windows Live.

Why in hell's name I cant modify my name?

You can. Options > Personal > Your profile > Name > Edit name.

You can't have 'display names' as they used to be but you can certainly show your actual name and edit that if you wish (I'm not suggesting having some silly long name in there like most people will try; I'm suggesting you use your actual name).

That's a workaround to a feature that shouldn't have been removed in the first place. Why should it be harder to the same thing in a next release? This release of WLM makes no damn sense!

And, to reiterate what King Mustard said, that workaround doesn't even work when both people have webcams. Not everyone wants their webcam on when they watch someone else.

MS is just trying to pull an Apple and decide what's best for us, and like usual they probably won't even listen to the complaints.

I'm getting "Error 1714. The older version of Windows Live SOXE Definitions cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group. System Error 1612." when I try to install...

Google is not my friend !!!

Any Ideas ???

Have you tried manually removing Windows Live Wave 3 before installing? Don't worry removing it won't get rid of your settings by the way.

having a few problems with WLM sending messages to facebook even with my account linked, and also WLM likes to pop up from the minimised view for no reason what so ever

also im appearing offline to my contact, and also my partner is also showing offline to me as well

As long as they don't put Nickname support back in and Prinstcreen -> Paste support for ppl with something older than 9.0 I'm not using it. Really, removing nicknames was not a good idea since like a huge part of their userbase are teens that want fancy stuff...

    • AltSendme 0.4.1 by Razvan Serea AltSendme is a minimal, cross-platform application designed for fast, secure, and private peer-to-peer file transfers. It allows users to send files or entire directories directly between devices without relying on cloud servers, accounts, or any personal information. Everything is encrypted end-to-end using modern protocols like QUIC and TLS 1.3, ensuring both strong security and low-latency performance. Transfers are verified with BLAKE3 for data integrity, and interrupted downloads automatically resume, making the experience reliable even on unstable connections. You can transfer anything—images, videos, documents, and more. Integrity checks are performed on both ends, so your files are automatically verified for correctness during both sending and receiving. AltSendme works seamlessly across local networks or long-distance links, capable of saturating multi-gigabit connections for extremely fast delivery. With built-in NAT traversal and encrypted relay fallback, it connects devices almost anywhere. The app integrates with the Sendme CLI and will soon support mobile and web platforms. Fully free and open-source, AltSendme offers a lightweight, privacy-first alternative to traditional cloud-based services, removing size limits, upload costs, and unnecessary data exposure. AltSendme 0.4.1 changelog: Release Highlights Self-hosted relays: Run your own iroh relay so transfers don't rely on public infrastructure. Includes a full deployment template in deploy/relay/ with Docker Compose for a VPS and configuration examples for production use. Fly.io support: One-click deploy template for Fly.io, including a quick-start config (fly.dev.toml) for testing without a custom domain, plus production setup with Let's Encrypt and your own hostname. Relay settings UI: New Settings → Network panel to choose how AltSendme connects: automatic public relays, custom self-hosted URLs (with optional auth token), or disabled. Test connections, verify latency, and see live relay status in the footer. Disable relays: Turn off relay servers entirely when you only need same-network transfers (e.g. LAN). Direct connections only. No relay hop required when devices can reach each other. Android graduates from beta: Android is now part of the regular release cycle alongside desktop. APKs ship with each version (universal, arm64, and armv7). • You are mostly right about the ephemeral nature of it. As I mention in the article, if you dont add a second device or take a backup of your account before uninstalling it, then yes you will lose access to your account. That said, in terms of actual user experience when you sync multiple devices your message history carries across and there's also a Saved Messages chat like there is on Telegram to send messages and attachments between your installs. But yh, what you point out are correct and its not trying to emulate Messenger or Telegram.
    • OK so SearXNG is a meta search engine that you can install locally or use via a public instance. It scrapes other search engines which you choose and then sorts the results. Not as complicated as multiple relays
