Microsoft: Kinect to see Live-like evolution ?over the length of the entire Xbox platform?

Serious business. Microsoft has told VG247 that, not only will Kinect see a Live-like evolution ?over the length of the entire Xbox platform,? but that it could also be applied across multiple ?mediums?.

Speaking in Germany last week, Kinect creative chief Kudo Tsunoda said Microsoft?s commitment to motion gaming was here to stay when asked if we?re likely to see Kinect functionality built into any future hardware.

?When you think about when Xbox Live first launched, it?s a [very] different experience than it is today. Live as a platform has evolved over time, with new technology and new features and new experiences, and that is something that has given it longevity over multiple types of consoles,? said the exec.

?I think that?s the same thing you?re going to see with Kinect, not just, ?Hey, we have great stuff at launch,? but you?ll see it evolve as a platform over time, see it as something that will extend not only through Xbox but could be applied through a lot of different mediums.?

Tsunoda explicitly said that motion gaming would be an Xbox feature for as long as the brand existed, calling both Kinect and Live ?platform initiatives?.

?Xbox is really good at not just launching it and having that be it, but really develop new features and new experiences over the length of the entire Xbox platform,? he said.

?I think that, just as you see that with Xbox Live, that?s something you?re going to see with Kinect as well.?

Shake it like it?s for the camera

Microsoft?s commitment to Kinect is currently compounded whenever top brass speaks about the system on the record, with Xbox Europe boss Chris Lewis saying last week that its introduction will grant 360 life until 2015.

?Kinect really gives us, I think, a very genuine additional five years,? he said, speaking to BusinessWeek at gamescom.

?What Kinect does is broaden us out to users that we weren?t addressing in the past.?

Tsunoda also took time last week to deny Kinect has problems viewing seated players, telling us the system works with sitting, standing and ?everything in between?.

Kinect is now confirmed to be launching at ?130 and $150.

It hits the US on November 4, to be followed in Europe on November 10.

You can listen to Kudo speaking in the audio clip below.

Microsoft denies Kinect voice control launch omission

August 24th, 2010 @ 13:53

By Patrick Garratt

Microsoft has just denied that voice controls have been dropped from Kinect?s launch, despite an MCV story to the contrary.

?Voice control is an exciting part of the Kinect for Xbox 360 controller-free experience and we can confirm that it will be available at launch in November 2010,? said the firm in a statement.

?Only on Xbox 360 will you be able to navigate the Kinect Hub using your voice to control your movies, TV Shows and music. We do not have additional details to share about local voice availability at this time.?

MCV reported earlier today that there would be ?no voice control for Kinect launch?.

?Microsoft has confirmed to MCV that Kinect will not boast any voice control functionality at launch,? said the site.

?Speaking at Gamescom, marketing manager for Xbox Live EMEA Robin Burrowes stated that ?we will be announcing when voice control will be turned on in due course.?

The site then updated its piece to say, ?MCV can also confirm that chat software Video Kinect will also not feature as part of the accessory?s launch. Like voice control, that will also arrive at a later date.?

We?ll have Microsoft?s official response soon.

Sethos posted that the other week. I'm now in love with the term Xbros

Waggling dildo-free is miles better though :p

It is quite catchy :p

Guess he posted this one as well?

PDP announces lineup of Kinect peripherals

by Richard Mitchell on Aug 24th 2010 5:30PM

kinectstand-1.jpg

"Peripherals for Kinect? How does that work?" you might be asking yourself. First, we would point out that every article of clothing you own is technically a Kinect peripheral. Second, the first Kinect peripherals from PDP aren't the kind you might expect. Rather than offering up plastic tennis rackets or lightsabers, PDP has announceda line of products (first glimpsed at E3) to help consumers mount their new Kinect in various situations.

  • Wall Mount - $14.99
  • TV Mount - $39.99
  • Extension Cable - $49.99(!)
  • Floor Stand - $29.99

We suppose some people might spend $40 on the VESA standard TV mount, though you could accomplish the same task with $5 worth of Velcro. The floor stand might prove useful, however, as it keeps the unit "above the floor to help protect the Kinect for Xbox 360 from foot traffic and dirt." We might suggest the off-brand version of the floor stand, though. It's called a table. PDP's Kinect products will be available this November.

The TV Mount seems like something I might get... :geek:

Kinect kits are now out in the public!

That email purportedly sent out by Microsoft a couple weeks back inviting its recipients into a Kinect beta program? Yeah -- it was legit. Joystiq has received corroborating evidence confirming the program, including pictures of the promised Kinect-enabled dashboard update running on a participant's retail console. In them, you can clearly see the flatter presentation, new mini-guide and revamped Avatar editor -- complete with a re-proportioned Avatar.

Our tipsters clearly didn't read the included guidelines, pictured in the gallery bellow. Apart from the laundry list of methods via which participants aren't supposed to talk about the program, there's confirmation that Kinect hardware is indeed part of the beta, "is being packed" and will presumably be on its way to testers soon. These same sources report that the beta support site mentions Kinect Adventures, Kinect Sports and Kinect Joy Ride as titles they can expect to receive for testing purposes.

We'll have more on the program as its participants continue to refuse acknowledgment of Microsoft's terms and conditions.

Hmm not sure I am a fan of the "flat" ui design.

It looks a lot better than the previous beta builds, but still...

I don't like it as much either. If they are doing it to improve performance, I will easily take a visual hit for that.

Dashboard Update Screenshots, Video (same link as previous page, but Joystiq updated with more screens and a video)

http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/26/sources-kinect-beta-kits-going-out-dashboard-update-live-for-p/

I was weary of the new design until I saw this. Looks amazing -- love the Metro design. The new sounds are so much easier on the ears, too. I can't even begin to say how the old "pop" noise (when selecting an item) was getting.

Seems incredibly smooth, too.

OH wow, how long till this guy gets banned, nothing to hide in that video really.

That aside, it does look very nice and smooth/fast. Also making it flat helps with using the dash with kinect actually, aside from making things flat they're also a bit bigger making for a larger selection area when using your hands later on.

For people that can't be bothered to go to the link.

Can anybody answer my question: Is the dashboard native 1080p now? PM me or reply.

wow ... doesn't even try to hide his gamertag. hope he gets banned

    • Amazon eero Pro 6E mesh Wi-Fi system 2-pack is 27% off by Ivan Jenic The Amazon eero Pro 6E mesh Wi-Fi system is currently $239.99 on Amazon for the 2-pack, down from $329.99. That's 27% off and $90 saved for a solid Wi-Fi solution that covers your entire home (purchase link down below). The 2-pack covers up to 4,000 square feet (372 square meters) and supports 100+ connected devices, which handles the vast majority of home setups without breaking a sweat. Wi-Fi 6E brings access to the 6 GHz band for lower latency across the network, and the 2.5 Gb Ethernet port supports gigabit+ internet plans if your ISP offers them. eero's TrueMesh technology handles traffic routing automatically, so you're not manually managing which devices connect to which node. You set up the entire thing through the eero app, and the entire process takes a few minutes. The system also receives automatic security updates in the background, so once you set it up, you don't have to worry about compatibility issues. If you're covering a larger home or want more nodes, the 3-pack is $329.99 and the 4-pack is $479.98, both at similar discount levels. It's worth mentioning that a newer model exists, which is likely the reason for the discount, but the Pro 6E is still perfectly capable hardware for most homes. • Ladybird Browser is no longer accepting outside contributions thanks to AI by David Uzondu The Ladybird Browser Project has announced it will no longer accept public pull requests and will limit changes to those made by its maintainers as it works towards its first alpha release. According to Ladybird's creator Andreas Kling, this is "not a change we make lightly," but the rapid shift in AI capabilities forced their hand. Previously, a massive PR implied that the person behind it put a lot of care into the code and is ready to "answer for the consequences." Now with AI, anyone can generate a PR without even understanding the bug fix or feature they want merged. The blog post goes on to say that the team is closing all open public pull requests immediately, and that maintainers will not treat external forks as a review queue for upstream Ladybird. Instead, the team wants outside contributors to focus on reporting bugs and running tests. Kling started Ladybird back in 2019 as LibHTML, a simple HTML viewer for his hobby operating system, SerenityOS, but by September 2022, it had turned into a full-fledged browser project. What sets Ladybird apart from the likes of Google Chrome, Apple Safari, or Mozilla Firefox is its totally independent engine, which does not rely on pre-existing codebases. The project maintains a strict policy against default search engine deals or user data monetization, keeping development funded entirely by donations and sponsorships. Generative AI is forcing open source project maintainers to rethink how they handle public code contributions (and the whole open-source thing in general). One month ago, a leak about the National Health Service (NHS) suggested the organization was planning to take all of its public repositories private ahead of a May 11 deadline, thanks to Mythos (an AI model that Anthropic believes is too dangerous to be released to the public) and its ability to find and write exploits for zero-day vulnerabilities. Thankfully, the Government Digital Service (GDS) issued a counter-report titled "AI, open code and vulnerability risk in the public sector" that stopped the shutdown by pointing out that hiding code does not improve security.

    • I like the show more options. The only problem with it is that it's not always in a consistent spot in the menu. If the copy/paste/cut, happens to show on top, then more option is the last in the menu. But if copy/paste/cut happens to show on the bottom, then more options is before the copy/paste/cut. But I do like the more options because it hides the stuff that I rarely use. But I would like to choose what it is or isn't hiding. That would make it better.
