In which case, take it to a supervisor, that's the reason they exist.

We have Supervisors. And, failing that, we have Admins.

If you really, really want a forum where you are free to insult other members, Neowin is not the place for you. Sorry, but that is the plain truth.

No one is saying lets start cursing everyone out.I just think somethings like trivial pictures should be taken with a grain of salt.

I'd say the moderation staff have a much better idea of what's a warnable offence and what not.

If pictures posted are trivial, then they're spam. Which is not allowed.

Mods over it look it all the time though. Ive seen them post in threads that have pictures in them. When they delete a post they usually give a reason. But i hardly ever see them do that.Unless its pictures of almost naked chicks.

If it was such a big taboo they would post a sticky up telling everyone not to do it.

One thing that members shouldn't need to be told to do is to be respectful to other members. If someone lashes out and call other members "twats" or they post insulting images then they aren't being a good member, plain and simple.

Now sometimes you'll get away with it and sometimes you won't. We can't read every thread and not every member uses the report button. If you get a warning that you think is in error then talk to a Supervisor. I know that I have reversed other mods' warnings and I know that other staff have pointed out some of my mistakes as well. Each warning gets its own thread and it isn't uncommon for there to be a discussion of the incident.

They could have been on lunch/work, and wanted to post something quick, but were unable to take care the issue at the time. Or they just didn't want to deal with it at that time. I know sometimes the last thing I want to do is warn someone when I'm just relaxing on a lunch break. Thats why we have more then one mod, as well as the report function.

You are dragging this on a bit much.

Solution as said before is "Use the report button." Problem solved. And if its considered trolling, flame bait or a personal attack on someone it will most likely result in a warning with the post being edited.

I also said I was done with the matter as well.

The real problem is when a user voices their honest opinion on a thread and a mod finds it insulting (not other members, only the mod). That's when the mod uses his/her power on something personal. That is wrong.

Huh?

So mods should not act on posts unless they are reported? Are mods incapable of determining rule violations?

Moderator actions DO NOT occur in a vacuum. They are known to all staffers, and often discussed. Of the 10 open reports being considered and discussed, one of them has 8 different comments on it.

There are no rogue moderators. Yes, there is an occasional error, but bringing the issue up with a Supervisor (or an Admin, if the Super issued the warn or whatever) will re-open discussion on the item.

You are making a mountain out of where not even a molehill exists here. :ermm:

:p Read the thread. The feature has been totally disabled for the time being.

I did, but it changes so quickly, and beer slows down the senses.

And it was neodude was it? Well I can tell you that he'd better...do whatever he likes with them, cos I have never used them, and probably never would.

I'll buy a sub 2 and Neobond some beer. Will that work?

Would totally work if I were him ;)

Personally, I don't get the thing about moving retired moderators to an own group, which doesn't have the privileges anymore. Just that someone gives up their position as a moderator, because of lack of time (we're not talking about people who turned out irresponsible etc.), shouldn't take their powers back...

My point is a group called "ex-moderators", which has technically got the same privileges, but at the same time means, that the person is not obligated to do one's duty :p

Are you complaining about Vets?

They have no powers at all. They are also saddled with the disadvantages of being a staffer of being forever ineligible for Neowin giveaways (to avoid appearances of favoritism).

Not sure what you think they have as the "same privileges", but they don't. Trust me, I was one for years before being asked if I would want to come back to staff.

    • Still 3x what it should cost. So, it seems the trick is to increase price by 6x so that a reduction in price back to 4x looks like a steal. "You savvy shoppers win again!" I'm glad I'm not in a desperate spot to actually even need this overpriced crap. Hopefully, it comes back down by the time for when (or if) I ever do.
    • Although AI is great and has it's use cases they likely have massively overhyped it and it has not delivered as per their expectations. I fully expect them to start saying the same things again when it does get to a certain level of intelligence!
    • Microsoft wants to end printer driver headaches with Windows Ready Print by Usama Jawad A few days ago, Microsoft released Windows 11 Experimental build 26300.8553, bringing a ton of enhancements such as Start menu customization, search improvements, Taskbar polish, and other minor UI tweaks. Another relatively major enhancement snuck deep within the change log was related to upgrades to the Windows printing experience. Now, Microsoft has shared more details about these benefits. For starters, Microsoft has renamed its Modern Print Platform to Windows Ready Print. The company believes that this name highlights its shift in strategy, which now focuses on modernizing, securing, and streamlining the printing experience for Windows devices. Some of the upgrades present in Windows Ready Print have already been seeded to customers and partners. This includes ending support for third-party printer drivers via Windows Update and transitioning towards the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) and the native Windows IPP printer driver. In line with these changes, new printer installations will default to Windows Ready Print on eligible devices starting from July 2026. However, Microsoft recognizes that not all environments will be able to migrate to this platform immediately, so it will allow users to choose between installing the printer via Windows Ready Print or the traditional OEM process. Users will be able to toggle this configuration through Settings > Bluetooth & Devices > Printers & Scanners > Printer preferences. This control applies only to new printer installations, and its functionality can also be modified via Group Policy as follows: Launch Group Policy Editor Navigate to Local Computer Policy -> Administrative Templates -> Printers Find and select 'Configure Windows Ready Print driver ranking' -> double click to open it Select 'Enabled' (if you wish to enable Windows Ready Print driver selection) or 'Disabled' (if you wish to explicitly disable Windows Ready Print driver selection). Select Apply Select OK Similarly, if you set up Windows protected print mode through the same setting in Windows 11, it will also default to using Windows Ready Print exclusively. Microsoft hopes that these improvements will help eradicate dependency on OEM-specific driver installation processes and simplify printer installations. We'll likely find out more about other tangible benefits in the coming months.
