the "who down'd my post" thing can be easily avoided

if i remember correctly from other forums that have used IPB you can have it so you can see who reped you

(not that that would nessesarily solve it either, it might just cause other problems, but that's where a rule bulleten would come in, and a few warning if people disobayed the bulleten)

Yeah, the problem there is we don't like any of those options. We want to minimize the negative friction between members. The goal is a happy, happy, joy, joy sort of world which although unachievable is still worthwhile to strive towards getting as close as we can get. We don't want lurkers to be afraid to post out of fear that they'll be skinned alive by trolls.

You're wrong about that, despite what you think I am FOR the community, but when a portion of that is being abused it is my job as site owner to discuss that with the staff moderators and sort it so that it works.

If you think differently, then thats your opinion.

Werent you going to bed last page?

Why not put it to a vote then? Instead of having all this bickering back and forth just put a poll up and if the community wants it back bring it back if not leave it gone. I know you all were saying you wanted a new system. so why not include that in the poll too.

Well just to quote one example I knew someone who got warned here just for using the term "clever dick". In this day and age, most people don't even consider a term like that to be an insult. I can understand that some things are worthy of warnings, but surely there are occasions where discretion can just be used, and you can give a person a verbal warning. Besides it feels like the staff here (particularly Neobond) go out of their way to isolate members with high warn levels, and in some senses even talk about them as if they are a lower class of person. I am not trying to claim people should never be banned, just that a little more tact and decorum could maybe be exercised.

Haha you're so wrong it's funny.

Just give up, even if the majority of people wanted the rep system the way it was they aren't going to change their minds and bring it back.

pretty much, to be completely honest, in all the IPB forums i'm apart of this was the last one to turn off the rep system, all have found that it's a bigger hassle then it's worth

in one of the worst cases i saw some guy was a big enough jack ass to rep down an entire thread just because he didn't like linux

so, yes, neowin's probably better off without the rep system

Actually a good idea, keep it anonymous with the voting, put a sticky on the front page for a bit (or just make it the new poll for the news page) and leave it there for a week. A week later the decision will be made for yas whether to keep it or drop it...

Anarkii, I agree! Only if it can't be abused. And clearly today we saw that the system we have (courtesy of IPB) does not work.

Nooo... Last night I had like 50,000 rep points and this morning I have none. If members are awarding rep points for reasons other than you would like, why don't you just not call it rep points? Ask "Is this post helpful?" before the +/-. Or, if you are really pro, let people rate posts on different merits. +helpful, +funny, +interesting, etc. I could easily code that for the right price. :shifty:

indeed, i wasn't recommending it, i did say in my post "it might just cause other problems" which it most likely would, a.k.a more petty arguments in threads (probably getting people banned) and probably some PM wars as well,

it's sad really how people can overreact to the smallest things

Neo - surely it can't be abused since we can only vote once with our logins?

Just have it so it says do you want the rep system to be:

Here (vote up and down)

Gone (as it is currently)

Like it was (vote up only)

Reset to 0 for everyone and we start over how it was.

Reset to 0 for everyone and we start over with + and - rep enabled.

now this i would actually like to see in action, could be intersesting

Totally ignoring my post lol. It takes someone else to notice what I say to get mentioned real nice.

The "new" system is a way away yet, but despite your grievance it will be in your benefit. Those details will be made clear when we're ready, please don't forget that Neowin costs money to run, including development, so anything that is announced by us, first needs to be set in stone.

That idea is better than mine :) I would like this :woot:

also put troll in there votem up if u think they are trolling.

I already mentioned that it would be nice to have some sort of troll system, but we can't do that :p

This will happen, already decided upon.

Clever dick is actually a very good example. I have reversed a warning for that in the past and so I well versed on it. It would be considered an insult in North America because nobody wants to be a smartass penis. The expression doesn't have the same meaning in the U.K. though. Mind you, I had to discuss this with U.K. staffers to come to that conclusion. I believe I asked the member not to use the expression on Neowin in the future due to the potential for misunderstanding.

i've never even heard of clever click before, so it's obviously not too widely known

or i'm just in the dark :p

Yeah, forums would be easy to manage if you took the people out of it. :D

I take a lot of pride in being a smartass penis. Also, I once got banned from a forum for using the word exacerbate.

Excellent, let me know when you would like to employ my services. I assume that is the part you meant was already decided upon.

True, it's mainly an English saying, I guess Smart Alec would be the more internationally recognised form of the phrase. Maybe some people are offended by the word dick, because the implication is the same :p
