See I have no problem with the fact that it's an open world game. I have a problem that the driving gets ****ing boring. And that driving is a requirement in every mission. It really takes away a lot of the excitement of the game away, especially if you have to abide by the speed limit and stop at every red light.

This game needs quick travel bad.

so i found a free roam mod. staarts you off with a tommy gun, ahand gun, and some nades. you can pick time of day and season.

unfortunately you can't save and every time you die you have to start from scratch.

still i managed to do some driving around, massacre some crowds of people, and have a merry police chase.

how do i get "unwanted"? even after i evade the cops there is a wanted icon in teh lower right, and then later a license plate with wanted on it if i do "something"(?) in whatever car i am driving.

Visit a clothes shop and change your outfit to get rid of wanted, take the car to a repair shop and change the licence plate.

The police don't mind not stopping at a red light.

Just finished it. Its too short even compared to Mafia 1. The whole point of having an open world was absent in the game. I didn't even need to go to the gun shop ever. Driving was the only thing that was there. No where near Mafia in any way. Very disappointing. A bit too linear unlike Mafia 1

I started playing through Mafia II last night. I did try to go back and complete the first Mafia, but by mission 6, "Better Get Used To It", I remembered why I never completed it the first time round: the shooting is TERRIBLE! It's worse than Alpha Protocol! 9 times out of 10, my crosshairs are aimed right at the guy's head, and I always miss! What's worse, during that mission, I sneaked around to catch an enemy by his side, and I shot him in the side of his torso with 6 bullets from a Colt 1911, and he didn't even flinch! The git then took me out.

Anyway, I started playing the second one last night. I'm on Chapter 3, I think. After the mission where you

steal the gas stamps from the federal building, then dash around the gas stations in town to sell them before midnight.

Top tip for this mission:

Turn off the safe alarm, and you will get $100 for every Gas Stamp

Already did the mission, but I never knew you could do that. I just

snuck in, silently choked out a guard, got the keys, opened the safe, and as soon as I pressed the button, I saw it was alarmed. I got a bit ticked off when I only got a third of the money though, because I swear the guy said I'd only lose money if I shot someone, and I never even took a gun out during the mission.

It is one of my favourite missions. I love the feeling you get when you slip away unnoticed, no police, no alarms or anything. They are left completely clueless.

It didn't go completely ###### up for me. One guard was shooting at me, but I knocked him out, then I snuck out the way I came in, dashed to my car, and the police were clueless after that. I just kept the limiter on and cruised away. :)

Oh, I can't believe how much it costs to get a car repaired in the game! Better to just steal another car if you wreck it.

Dont blame the game for your ****ty aim :p the weapons behave fine but I miss the even more accurate weapons and dot sight from Mafia 1 :p

The previous sight was so subtle

The hell do they. I watched a guy on YouTube play through the game, and he was firing all over the place as well!

The shooting system in Mafia II is miles better. I can zoom in, and the bullets actually go where you aim.

Are you playing on PC, or on the consoles? Because on the PC aiming with the mouse is easy, accurate and without any problems. You aim at the head = it hits in the head with any weapon.

Now I only drive with the XBOX360's gamepad on the PC version and sometimes when I'm too lazy to switch to keyboard+mouse after finishing driving I aim with the gamepad, and my accuracy drops noticeably. Found the only good way to aim with a gamepad, is to leave the aiming to the game; by moving the cursor to the general direction of the target and then when the next time you hit the aim button from your cover, it locks on the head of the target. Which leaves you to hit the fire button once to kill the target and move back to cover, for your next target.

edit: Eh, ignore all what I said. Noticed you were referring to Mafia 1 with the aiming problems too late.

so far one of my favorite games this year, very well made. nice story, nice sidetracking from the main plot in the beginning and then later on, and the graphics are really nice. Empire Bay is detailed, even if it's not interactive. the game looks truly amazing sometimes with the amount of detail they put into it, even on the 360 with AA turned off it's still one of the better looking games out there. and the writing makes sense to me, characters are pretty believable - i'm using weasel words because no, it's not a groundbreaking title, but it's very well made. i don't have any problem with the shooting mechanics, pulling off headshots is quite easy.

my only concern are the anachronisms - i mean there was no Playboy until 1953-1954, right? yet this one has us collecting them in 1945...that doesn't make a lot of sense, but they could always claim the game takes place in an alternate universe where Playboy came out a few years early. 8/10.

the ending sucked, and why have an open world if you can't use it for anything else then driving from point a to b. This game could have been awesome if you got more freedom, now its just a decent game.

Honestly people claiming this game is better then GTA 4 are crazy.

the point is atmosphere. lacking the technical ability to create a more believable "world", they went for the high res textures and strong detail of the city hoping you would feel it for sheer mood, rather than functional interactivity. for me it works, i really appreciate what they did and don't mind the linearity. i even love the atmosphere in the menu screen, really nice music and scene setting.

there's no way this is better than GTAIV in my books, it's not nearly as witty or complex, but it's definitely a prettier looking product.

Honestly people comparing Mafia II and GTA IV are crazy. Those are 2 different games, Mafia is not a sandbox, the focus is on a mature story, while GTA IV is all about sandbox fun while the story is good it's not nearly as mature as mafias.

The culture of "I want now, I don't have any patience" ladies and gentleman. Driving is part of the atmosphere with a game like Mafia.

Um, no. I was saying there's no enjoyment in it. And if there's no enjoyment, why not just give quick travel?

The number one ingredient of a "game" above graphics, gameplay, etc is an "objective." And besides traveling sometimes 5 minutes (and man is that a loooong 5 minutes), the only objective in driving is to start a mission.

So are you saying part of the Mafia appeal is to drive for 5 minutes to start a mission? That's part of the atmosphere?

Yes, yes it is - Not to mention the driving physics in this game is highly enjoyable.

We need to get past this quick travel / hold-my-hand crap.

Yeah, for me it is anyway. Take away that, and you lose some of the sense of flow that the story gives.

Then again, other than the odd action/shooter/adventure every now and then, most of my gaming time is spend behind a wheel with racing sims, so maybe that's just me

Yes it is, the build up to the big mission. The music on the stereo. The attention to detail for the cars, handling, scenery around you. It is all part of the package. To have a quick feature travel (like Borderlands?) would completely ruin the impact the game has on you.
Or have both. Then everyone can be happy.
Very few people would actually spend five minutes travelling there, most would opt to quick travel there. Thus completely destroying the feeling and atmosphere that the devs were trying to convey.

I didn't get any feeling of atmosphere while driving tbh. All I got was a tedious time sink. This is coming from the person who has invested over 12 hours in to Minecraft.

the option to quick travel in oblivion didn't stop me from exploring 99% of the mostly boring world map and doing the most interesting quest line in the whole game(the diety place of worship quest line i forget the name of). even though most of the POIs in oblivion were boring RNG clones of each other. i even found the unicorn.

but when you were doing the main story having quick travel helped with the flow of action, especially if you'd already explored all the POIs to have access to the best quick travel points.

then again some people felt that quicktravel ruined oblivion, compared to morrow wind.

idk, long travel times is a big pet peeve of mine in a lot of games these days, but in same games it adds something to the gameplay. for example nothing beat rping a space trucker in freelancer and planning out the most profitable routes and throwing in some country music on the winamp and spending a night grinding credits to get the best fighter ship in teh game and then avoiding all the trade lanes to get the special loots that were hidden in dangerous gas clouds.

the driving doesn't seem too bad in this game though tbh, but i could see it getting tedious if you spend more time in teh story driving than doing interesting stuff.

    • Ninja Theory was great until Microsoft acquired them. They let them spend a decade on two games, with a third on the way, that explore mental health and were OK interactive experiences. Sony appears to be able to choose better IPs to develop, particularly single player. I'm probably going to buy a PS5 just for Wolverine and God of War Laufey (which reminds me of Heavenly Sword when Ninja Theory was with Sony making games).
    • Good riddance to a terrible studio. They've done nothing but over promise features and fall flat with the releases they've put out.
    • hey buddy, i don't appreciate the attitude. Can't wait to see the results.
