PS3 finally hacked?

Recommended Posts

The reality of it though is someone still has to create an emulator and well how easy is it going to be to port/create applications for CELL? wacko.gif

Why it would be big and great news :p If only. My old ps2's dvd drive went out long ago, luckily its the old fat style, so modding it was easy. But I have games that are on DVD and unplayable that I would love to play.

no not "hacked" some one leaked the service Jig thats in the service centers, and have made a device for sale

to the public. no hacking has been done and the security remains intact.

this device just puts the ps3 into a service mode that some one wrote a custom loader for from the leaked SDK

Eurogamers thoughts

Bearing in mind that PSJailbreak is retailing for upwards of $130, there's a very strong possibility that this may well be the most expensive and short-lived hack ever made, and factoring in the simplicity of the hardware, the very high price seems almost reminiscent of a smash-and-grab raid on users intent on piracy no matter what the cost. The makers of PSJailbreak are charging so high a price because the window of opportunity in terms of exclusivity and the longevity of the hack itself is potentially very small.

In terms of the make-up of the dongle itself, pictures posted online of the internals show a basic USB device - what looks like an innocuous 48-pin microcontroller chip on the tiny PCB and not much else. It's quite astonishing to believe that the makers are asking for a colossal $130+ for such a tiny piece of tech, and it's almost certain to be reverse-engineered, ripped off and duplicated by the Chinese mass-suppliers within days of hitting the market.

Most likely true.

even though security isnt actually broken, surely from this they can work from the inside out?

Exactly. There's the homebrew launcher, so once people learn to code for the Cell then there will be some interesting things on that front.

looks like we got something worth while

Wow. It's only a matter of time before others figure out other options as well. I am glad I PAY and SUPPORT the developers of our games on ALL consoles.

Great video :)

+1

Exactly. Thats the point and the main reason why Sony will have trouble blocking this "movement". Now, new exploits will be discovered.

Right now the word is WAIT for a new exploit, either thru hardware or software.

The strange is that there are few reports on it being hacked. Im guessing most sites want a "hands on" confirmation to prove that this works (normal and thats what Id want too)

PS Jailbreak Team's site just crashed. They report that they hope to get it fixed in the next 12 hours.

Either

1: Too much traffic

2: They disappear like most of these that say they hacked the PS3

3: Sony

I hope this is true, my PS3 is proof that downloading games and using they backups can be used for good, since my laser is broke I wont be able to make backups :( or play the games with the disks...

Feels bad, man :(

Future is not sounding too good for the mod :/

    • Yeah, this is absolutely nothing new and EA have done it before. Burnout Paradise, released in 2008, had dynamic advertising billboards that were updated via the internet and targeted people based on location and what EA knew about them from their profile. It was particularly notable for the fact that the Obama presidential campaign ran ads in the game, in an attempt to reach a younger audience who didn't watch broadcast TV any more. It was by no means the first though. Battlefield 2142 from 2006 had the same thing. In fact, Neowin wrote a story about it back then. https://www.neowin.net/news/ba...-in-game-ads-clarification/
    • This is obviously aimed at the education where Apple has lost so much ground to Chromebooks in the last few years, but unless they come up with a comparable management system for education why would anyone switch back?
    • Here's how we arrived at that claim: Note that this is just Play Store downloads. The app is also available on the Galaxy App Store
    • Google Play states the app had more than 50 million downloads. What other metric do you suggest should be used?
    • MSN defined our generation in some ways, kind of like Snapchat and TikTok have done for future generations. I have great memories of the MSN era in the late 90s / early 2000s. In the UK everyone seemed to come home from School and go on MSN for the evening. We didn't really have mobile phones then, so other than going and knocking on your friends door it was a totally new way of interacting with people. I also loved how I could talk to people I’d met playing online games from around the world. Inviting people to NetMeeting and messing about with the shared white board and webcams was pretty fun, even if webcams only ran at a couple of fps over dial-up. All the random things you could do with MsgPlus! were really fun - I suspect that made a few people jump with /shello randomly blasting Mr Hankey out their speakers! Maybe I’m just nostalgic, however I do feel the internet and computers were more fun back then.
