Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick out NOW!

Completely disagree. It's fast, stable, and very user friendly these days.

I highly doubt you'll use anything but windows.

What bugs are you talking about precisely?

It's not called windows, it's called Linux. Use Linux apps on Linux, and windows apps on windows. It's that simple.

The pre-installed Empathy instant messaging client already supports AIM, and many other networks, such as MSN, Google Talk, IRC, Jabber, ICQ, Yahoo, Facebook chat, etc all in one client. As for steam, well that's coming to Linux in the near future AFAIK.

Obvious troll is obvious.

How am I a troll? I think your trolling sir.

- Gaming. I am a user of Steam and often play games, games which are not natively supported in this OS. I know it's not their fault, but still... I would miss my games if only used Linux;

Many games can be played on Linux. Wow, CS, COD, Starcraft, etc. Steam is coming to Linux in the near future apparently.

- Yes, fonts. I find the default fonts too big, kinda bad looking, and therefore have to install windows fonts to make them look better;

The new Ubuntu font with 10.10 is beautiful.

- Multimedia capabilities. Specifically video with VDPAU, I can't seem to have v-sync in videos with compiz enabled.

Activate the Video Playback component of Compiz.

- Theming. Only a few are, IMO, pretty, and I find that they ocupy too much desktop space (like the big default fonts). I would have liked a more compact look on the windows, buttons and controls.

Try http://gnome-look.org/

Apparently, these seem to be affecting Wubi users only. If you do a regular installation (overwrite, or dual boot), or upgrade, then you'll be fine. By the way, which windows OS are you using? It might just be related to windows 7.

Is there a Ubuntu thread around for this? I did a quick Google serach before when I posted and it showed this as a common problem.

And I am running Windows 7.

Just managed to create a bootable USB for my netbook, and right out the box it's the wifi is working, which was a major stumbling block the last time I tried it.

I've been using Jolicloud since the beginning of the year and didn't think I'd ever move away from it, now having given 10.10 a spin I can see me starting again with Ubuntu. It's certainly a lot quicker and responsive, plus the UI is very intuitive. Just need to set aside sometime at the weekend to get fully up and running.

WiFi support keeps getting better and better and better out of the box.

It's not, they're equally easy. My bad, I should have rephrased/corrected that.

I really like how now you still are performing setup actions like choosing keyboard layout, location or username and the OS is already installing.

well then.

(1) The system doesn't have to reboot several times during installation

(2) It automatically resizes partitions for you, and recognises ntfs partitions, but the same can not be said of windows recognising ext.

(3) The installation often stalls while "expanding windows files" for win7.

(4) Difficult installing windows 7/vista from a usb stick.

(5) Lightning fast installation for Ubuntu.

(6) Fits on a cd-r

(7) Can test it out before installing using the live cd.

(1)it depend ,but i noticed windows does so for graphic driver usually. i bet it will be non issue in the next windows

(2)Microsoft could careless for niche like linux(1%) , no big demand for such feature so why would they care ??

(3) while , not really it is working behind

(4)no it is not , http://download.cnet...4-10972600.html

(5) because it very small in size you had to download most other thing over the internet

(6)not like DVD is expensive ??? ,or that DVD reader isn't standard in every machine since long time now!

(7)problem that windows is closed source , and then again doubt that Linux has that much of 'compatibly' concept which Microsoft is victim of there own success

Many games can be played on Linux. Wow, CS, COD, Starcraft, etc. Steam is coming to Linux in the near future apparently.

Let's hope Steam in Linux isn't too far ahead. I don't play any of the games you mentioned, I play TF2, BC2, Borderlands, Civ5,...

The new Ubuntu font with 10.10 is beautiful.

Personally, I'm not a fan of it. Changed it to Sans.

Activate the Video Playback component of Compiz.

Will try it, thanks for the tip.

It was the first place I looked. Not one single theme stood out for me, I thought they were pretty sub-par quality.

(1)it depend ,but i noticed windows does so for graphic driver usually. i bet it will be non issue in the next windows

It does it every time. I've installed it on multiple machines, from desktops to laptops. Always reboots several times.

(2)Microsoft could careless

Precisely the problem. Support for other software/platforms is always lacking in microsoft products. OpenDocument format support is very poor in Office 2010.

(3) while , not really it is working behind

Regardless, it hangs.

And the minimum size for that is 4gb... I can install Ubuntu on less than a 1gb usb stick.

(5) because it very small in size you had to download most other thing over the internet

? It comes with 100x more software than windows. All in the iso, not downloaded.

(6)not like DVD is expensive ??? ,or that DVD reader isn't standard in every machine since long time now!

CD's are much less expensive, and they are quicker to burn with less chance of errors.

(7)problem that windows is closed source , and then again doubt that Linux has that much of 'compatibly' concept which Microsoft is victim of there own success

Yes, windows is closed source, and you can't try it out without installing it. Disgraceful.

yeah, 10.10 is awesome I don't think I'll ever boot into windows again...

1: following the guide on the site, the tool they told me to use doesn't have the netbook edition so, I needed to figure out I need to rename the netbook iso in order to make the bootable memory stick

2: after install the first thing I get is a message that it can't load unity because there's no driver, wtf.... awesome UX...

3: can't download said driver cause there's no drivier for my WiFi

4: plugin in network cable not working, can't connect to network. from my previous ubuntu and mint experience I suspect this is because I didn't remove the swap drive

5: reinstalled and removed and recreated all the linux partitions.

6: wired network still no working.

F this crap.

I 100% agree

Had nothing but trouble with it from the second I tried to install (Wubi and clean install)

Endless freezing trying to install drivers

Then to wrap it all up, the desktop window manager thing broke so I couldnt enable effects, and it stole my bar at the top of the windows with minimise / close / max etc etc

Stuck my Windows 7 Ultimate USB key in and wiped it clean...

Why would not removing the swap partition prevent you from getting online?

I don't know, but it happened with both Ubuntu and mint before. didn't help this time though.

still a big bag of fail

Precisely the problem. Support for other software/platforms is always lacking in microsoft products. OpenDocument format support is very poor in Office 2010.

I dunno if OOo has gotten of their ass yet(from past history I doubt it) but when Office supported ODF, it actually had better and more complete ODF support than any other app. which ****ed off the ODF camp cause it revealed all the galring faults and holes in their standards. and the fact their standard suffered the same problem as their hated OXML, in that part of the standard are up to the app to support by it's own means, meaning those fucntions aren't guaranteed to be cross compatible.

1: following the guide on the site, the tool they told me to use doesn't have the netbook edition so, I needed to figure out I need to rename the netbook iso in order to make the bootable memory stick

Never had a problem with it.

2: after install the first thing I get is a message that it can't load unity because there's no driver, wtf.... awesome UX...

What hardware/model machine are you using? Most netbooks I know of work flawlessly.

yeah, 10.10 is awesome

Agreed xD

It does it every time. I've installed it on multiple machines, from desktops to laptops. Always reboots several times.

How does needing a reboot make the install process any more difficult? Do you have to open a command line and type command XYZ to continue? No.

Precisely the problem. Support for other software/platforms is always lacking in microsoft products. OpenDocument format support is very poor in Office 2010.

OpenDocument? OpenOffice is a classic example of inferior goods, something that people use only because it's cheaper (free, in this case), not because it's better. Your argument about Windows not recognizing ext partitions during install is a valid one, except that it'd be pretty dumb of them to waste time providing a feature that's asked for by less than 1% of their user base. If you seriously think Canonical would do the same if they were in Microsoft's position... wake up, please.

Regardless, it hangs.

That makes the process any more difficult because?

And the minimum size for that is 4gb... I can install Ubuntu on less than a 1gb usb stick.

Actually, Windows comes pre-installed by default, so in a typical scenario you don't need to do anything at all. If you bought Windows, it already comes on a DVD, so I have to ask why are you going out of your way to create an install USB in the first place. And if you torrented Windows, well, that's your own problem.

? It comes with 100x more software than windows. All in the iso, not downloaded.

I'd rather have control over what gets installed on my PC instead of having my OS come bundled with a bunch of inferior goods. Shame that being force-fed software down your throat is actually coming from Linux these days. But that's beside the point actually. Back to the issue, this makes the Windows install process any more difficult than Ubuntu because?

Yes, windows is closed source, and you can't try it out without installing it. Disgraceful.

I'm trying to install.. keep getting I/O errors during format/partitioning ... the error details says there may be an issue with a drive.. but everything is fine.. what gives? Never had a problem before.. it's x64

Are you using a LiveCD? I usually only get I/O errors because of a bad burn.

4 GB flash stick is cheap this days

you can easily obtain quality one between 9/15 USD

you can obtain windows legally from Microsoft through download

of the channels i can think of are technet and MSDNAA for students

the rest of your points can +1 from me

Can't understand why you are having so many issues. I did a clean install on a Toshiba Laptop and it is working like a charm. No freezing and it found all the drivers.

USB stick. and the network thing is, as I've experienced a standard ubuntu/min problem.

next I'll try to run live remove the partitions and then run the install again to make sure no nasty network breaking stuff is left in memory. maybe that'll help. As I said I've been through this carousell before and it's overall a fairly ****ty ride.

I bet they still don't have a proper ALP's pad driver though, which will make the whole OS unusable again, just like previous versions.

Installed 10.10 x86 through WUBI for now and had a bit of problems... the install went fine but each boot would just drop me in a GRUB shell telling me it can't find root.disk.

So I booted into recovery mode once which worked and I logged in through the shell, afterwards I rebooted just for the heck of it and normal boot suddenly worked too

The only other problem I experienced so far, the Plymouth bootscreen works fine with basic drivers even in 1920x1080, once I install the ATI drivers the bootscreen becomes horribly messed up and drops to 640x480.

Other than that 10.10 seems kinda snappier^^

Fonts? Seriously? dude if someone doesn't use an OS because of fonts they seriously needs to get out more.. to me i could give a crap, they all look the same to me..

If all fonts look the same to you, then maybe you should get out more.

If you bought Windows, it already comes on a DVD, so I have to ask why are you going out of your way to create an install USB in the first place.

Ever heard of netbooks or other computers without a built-in optical drive?

If you really think that WPE is the same thing as a Linux live CD, you are very much mistaken.

This is effin ridiculous though. My wireless works during setup, but after install it doesn't work and says there's no firmware... pretty sure they mean driver. And cabled is doing it's usual 4 year old routine and refusing to work... it's coded by effin monkeys

Like I said earlier, Linux is still buggy. Sometimes my wireless stops working randomly where in Windows, it always works 100% of the time.

Phenom II and HawkMan, what did you install from? I find it odd you are having so many problems....

Wireless network support is awesome in 10.10 and wired support should be near 99% perfect.

Wubi with a mounted ISO

And USB flash drive for clean completely formatted drive install

    • Rescind the stupid "Show more options" in context menus and just give us the full menu instead of adding more steps to get to what we want. The "simpler by default" makes me think they'll go in the opposite direction. Every context menu should have a configure button so you can pick and choose what options should be shown, I know you can do that with some registry fu but that shouldn't be required.
    • This is why competition must exist. Finally, pressure is mounting on Microsoft to move in the right direction.
    • Microsoft is making Windows 11's context menus faster, simpler, and configurable by Taras Buria Five years ago, Windows 11 introduced redesigned context menus, offering users a simpler, more modern design. However, customers quickly discovered that the new menus leave a lot to be desired. Many are unhappy with performance (they are really slow), while others dislike the double-layed design, where many options are hidden behind the "Show more options" button. In addition, over the years, menus became cluttered and overloaded. While Microsoft has already fixed plenty of pain points across Windows 11, context menus remain mostly unchanged. Fortunately, Microsoft is finally listening. Marcus Ash, Design and Research Lead for Windows at Microsoft, responded to a tweet on X, confirming that the company is working on fixing Windows 11's context menus. Reworked context menus are supposed to be faster, simpler by default, and "configurable to what you use most." What the latter means is unknown, just like whether Microsoft plans to keep the classic menu alongside the modern one, but according to Marcus, the wait should finally be over soon, as he promised to "share our approach soon." Improved context menus will most likely appear first in Windows 11 preview builds in the Experimental Channel. While we wait for Microsoft to release them, you can try fixing context menus on your PC with a simple tool called Windows 11 Context Menu Manager. It lets you disable entries you do not need, not only cleaning up context menus, but also making them significantly faster. Microsoft has already improved Windows 11's Start menu and taskbar, so hopefully it will address user criticism of the context menu as well. Stay tuned for new Windows 11 preview builds, which usually arrive every Friday.
    • If the drive/memory is soldered to the board, which it probably is, then it's a no from me
