[Official] Fallout New Vegas

why is the deathclaw mother so hard to kill? i have that cool toaster powerfist that kills all the other deathclaws without a problem but for some reason, she's giving me a hard time...

i'm having a bad time...

am i supposed to pizza instead of french fries?

after more than a month with this game i have to say it's really disappointing. not only is it unnecessarily hard on all difficulty levels, with enemies that seem to never run out of ammo and are over powered if wild animals, but it also has the most annoying quest structure. everyone you talk to dumps like three quests in your lap so you spend your entire time in a perpetual state of fetch quest anxiety. then, the signposting system is a mess - a good third of the quests i've been handed so far i gave up on cause they were just annoying to navigate. Fallout 3 was so much better. Honestly Alpha Protocol was more enjoyable than this!

I'd have to agree with most of this, especially the difficulty, I put it down to very easy after getting kiled the first few times, and it just didn't make it any easier at all and I got tired of getting killed, I even got stuck right at the end of the game because I just couldn't get past this one guy, the difficulty just feels broken.

Just an inferior game compared to Fallout 3, which was excellent, I haven't touched this for about 2-3 weeks because I just wasn't enjoying it that much, everything is so condensed into small areas and the invisible walls just get damn annoying.

I'm just utterly disappointed with this in the end, I don't care about the bad graphics or robotic animations as the gameplay and world that was in FO3 was just pure fun to go out an explore, but considering how long they had to essentially just get the content done, it is really lacking.

I found if you bring Boone along with you, the game gets super easy. He can kill virtually any monster before it even gets close to you unless they are in mobs, and even then he can usually handle 2 of them, killing the 2nd by the time it gets up to you. What I hate is he sometimes switches to his melee weapon for no reason and charges into the fray. The most difficult part for me in the game so far was attacking the Caesar (or whoever they are) compound. Even then, I didn't die, just came very close a few times.

I personally like this game better than the FO3, gameplay-wise it's almost identical, but I think some of the changes they have made for various things (such as adding the ammo benches and being able to recycle some of your used ammo).

That being said, I too have not touched it for a few weeks, but with games as long as Fallout it is pretty normal for me to do. I played FO3 probably 80% through, then stopped for a few months, picked it up again later and finished, stopped, picked it up a few months later and started exploring and doing some of the other side quests. I will likely do the same with NV.

One thing I will agree with you on though is it does feel much smaller than FO3, and as such, much more condensed. I like the reduced distance between major locations, it leads to less running and what not, but I also miss being able to explore and find locations that have nothing to do with the storyline. So far, it feels like every major location I have bumped into has had something to do with the main storyline.

After checking the bank and reading this I cancelled :p

I'll wait on the GOTY edition to hit ?17.

If you haven't played Fallout 3, or were one of those people that played the first half an hour and got bored or felt a confused as to what to do, you should go give that a go and then pick this up when the GOTY is out with all the DLC next year, lol.

Corris - glad you're on the same page. this is incredibly inferior to Fallout 3, no doubt about it. Some good story ideas and characters, but that's about it. Broken difficulty is just for starters. and don't get me going on companions nagisan, they're useless. even the tough talking Cassie crumples in seconds when up against a couple of cazadors.

not to mention the glitches - including the ****ing annoying one that tells you the strip suddenly requires a key, after you've already unlocked it and been there a bunch of times. i mean seriously, i have like 22 hours in this game, what am i supposed to do now? restart and hope the glitch doesn't happen again? give me a ****ing break Obsidian!

To each their own, I don't feel FO3 is "incredibly inferior" to NV, but I do feel that NV is better than FO3 (opposite of how you feel NV is, but not to the same extreme). While I haven't tried different difficulty levels, I have not had a problem on the lowest, I play games for the story and what not, not the difficulty, and I haven't died once on the lowest so I can complain about it being too difficult. For companions, I have Boone and whatever the dogs name is, and they both seem to work great. The dog runs into melee combat and distracts enemies, while Boone snipes them. I can honestly go through random wasteland encounters without even drawing my weapon. I've even had Boone kill things I was completely unaware of (it has actually confused me a few times because of the instant zoom-in slow motion thing when stuff dies, which is annoying). Other companions may be weaker, I have not tried any others, but with the right ones for your playstyle the game gets really easy.

I must be lucky, I have NEVER experienced a gamestopper bug with ANY Obsidian/Bethesda games...that includes, Oblivion, FO3 and all it's DLC and NV. Sure, I have seen bugs in all of them, but nothing that prevented me from playing properly. Not saying they don't exist, I just have never seen one actually happen, and that is with easily 30+ hours spent in each (more like 90 in Oblivion, maybe 50 or so in FO3).

it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest that a game this broken has non-standard difficulty levels - you may be on an "easier continuity" if you will. otherwise i can't explain this luck you're experiencing. you want to tell me you never had cazadors and other wild animals take you out in seconds, even on the lowest difficulty? indeed, you are very lucky.

Nope, I have seen quite a few of them, but they have always died before they could even get to me thanks to Boone and my own character using the unique Gauss Rifle (they die in 2 shots max from it, might be one, can't remember as it's been awhile since I played). The most I have ran into at one time though is 2-3, more might be trouble, but they have never even hit me so honestly they are not that difficult.

EDIT: I also have high perception though, so I usually spot them (on the radar) before they spot me, this allows me to usually spot them and take the first shot before they ever come after me, often killing one before the others even come at me.

FO Vegas is boring as hell and much harder that FO3.

I came upon like 5 rad scorpions. I had to run around for 30 minutes using every weapon I had to try and kill them. Didnt matter what I used, they all did very little damage. In FO3, they would be dead much quicker. Then there are those flies...not the boat flies, but the other ones. They hit and they hid HARD. A few hits from these will kill you and I have on heavy armor. Dont get me started on the deathclaws.

But my main issue is that FOV provides nothing new from FO3 except for a new landscape. Enemies are pretty much the same...humans, gouls, mutants. I am not even 1/2 through it (stopped to play AC Brotherhood) and I am already bored as hell. This game will probably end up getting traded soon.

I was using Boone. They he got stuck and I lost him. The same way I lost the dog and that one chick. The AI in FOV blows ass. They constantly get stuck, sometimes they dont join in the fight, or they get in the way.

I wasted $60 on this game that I was looking forward to and that was delayed several times. Bethesda dropped the ball here and i saw the on the video game awards announcing a new game. Hope it doesnt suck as much as FOV.

Let me guess, you're using 9mm and 10mm pistols? Look up the weapons NV has on the Fallout wiki and focus on getting at least one nice weapon. I did this, then focused on leveling the weapon skill for that weapon type, and I kill most things in 1 hit, very few things take 2 hits, and the only thing that takes more than 2 are bosses (even then, only the high-classed ones, like leaders of a faction). Add Boone 2-shotting everything (at the most, again, unless it's a boss) and the game is a walk in the park.

Look up the console commands to teleport you to him or him to you. Sure they are technically cheats, but you lost him due to a bug so theres no reason you shouldn't allow yourself to cheat to get him back. I did have him get stuck once, but after about 5 minutes he came running right back to me. Sure it's annoying when they get stuck due to no action from you, but there are ways around it, hating a game because of bugs that are repairable by the end-user is just looking for a reason to hate it IMO.

Guessed wrong. Tried most weapons against them and they dont go down.

Why should I have to use codes to get the AI back? I didnt have to in FO3.

Hating a game because of bugs, regardless if repairable by the user, is fine with me. Users shouldnt have to do work arounds, hacks, tweaks...whatever..to get a game working correctly and that should of been working properly to begin with. I dont know how this game got beyond testing, but they half assed it. AND I still CANNOT completed the "Fly away with me" quest without every saved game after being corrupted.

And speaking of corrupted game saves....I have been manually saving my game OFTEN since other people reported the game save issue in other quests. Sucks, FOV sucks, and I cannot wait for ME3 or AC3.

    • An actual cosmic "Eye of Sauron" had been looking straight at us all along by Sayan Sen Image by Kovin P. Vasquez via Pexels | Not representative An international team of researchers has solved a long-standing mystery surrounding a distant blazar known as PKS 1424+240, helping explain why it produces some of the brightest high-energy gamma rays and cosmic neutrinos ever observed despite appearing to have a relatively slow-moving jet. The findings were published on June 6 in Astronomy & Astrophysics Letters. The study addresses a broader challenge in astrophysics: understanding how extreme cosmic objects accelerate particles to very high energies and produce very high-energy (VHE) photons and neutrinos. PKS 1424+240 is located billions of light-years from Earth. It has attracted attention for years because it is both a powerful source of VHE gamma rays and the brightest known neutrino-emitting blazar in the sky, according to observations by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. It is also associated with one of the strongest peaks in IceCube's nine-year neutrino sky map A blazar is a type of active galactic nucleus powered by a supermassive black hole that pulls in surrounding matter and launches jets of plasma moving close to the speed of light. What makes blazars unique is their orientation. One of their jets points almost directly toward Earth, making them appear exceptionally bright across the electromagnetic spectrum and allowing scientists to study some of the most extreme physical processes in the Universe. The scientists exclaimed it's like the 'Eye of Sauron' in deep space. Usually, the brightest gamma-ray-emitting blazars are expected to have jets that appear to move very quickly. However, radio observations of PKS 1424+240 suggested that its jet was moving much more slowly, creating a contradiction that became part of a long-running problem known as the "Doppler factor crisis." To investigate, researchers analyzed 15 years of observations from the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), a network of 10 radio antennas spread across the continental United States, Hawaii and St. Croix. Using a technique called Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI), astronomers combine signals from widely separated radio telescopes to create a virtual Earth-sized telescope capable of revealing extremely fine details. The team combined 42 polarization-sensitive radio images collected between 2009 and 2025, creating a much deeper and more detailed view of the jet than had previously been possible. The observations were carried out as part of MOJAVE (Monitoring Of Jets in Active galactic nuclei with VLBA Experiments), a long-running program that studies the brightness, polarization and magnetic field structures of jets produced by active galaxies. The project aims to better understand how activity near supermassive black holes is linked to high-energy radiation and neutrino emission. “When we reconstructed the image, it looked absolutely stunning,” said Yuri Kovalev, lead author of the study and Principal Investigator of the European Research Council-funded MuSES project at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy. “We have never seen anything quite like it — a near-perfect toroidal magnetic field with a jet, pointing straight at us.” The image revealed an unusual geometry. The researchers found that Earth lies almost directly in line with the jet, with a viewing angle of less than 0.6 degrees. In simple terms, astronomers are looking almost straight down the jet. This turned out to be the key to the mystery. Because the jet is aimed almost directly at Earth, a relativistic effect called Doppler boosting dramatically increases its apparent brightness. The study found that this effect boosts the emission by a factor of about 30 while also making the jet appear slower than it actually is. “This alignment causes a boost in brightness by a factor of 30 or more,” said Jack Livingston, a co-author at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy. “At the same time, the jet appears to move slowly due to projection effects — a classic optical illusion.” The nearly head-on view also gave scientists a rare look at the jet's magnetic field. Using polarized radio signals, they detected a clear toroidal, or doughnut-shaped, magnetic field component. The observations suggest the jet carries an electric current and that its magnetic field helps launch, shape and stabilize the flow of plasma. Researchers believe this magnetic structure may also play a key role in accelerating particles to energies high enough to produce both gamma rays and neutrinos. “Solving this puzzle confirms that active galactic nuclei with supermassive black holes are not only powerful accelerators of electrons, but also of protons — the origin of the observed high-energy neutrinos,” Kovalev said. The research was conducted under the MuSES (Multi-messenger Studies of Energetic Sources) project, which investigates how active galactic nuclei accelerate particles and generate different cosmic signals, including light and neutrinos. Scientists say understanding how protons are accelerated and linked to neutrino production remains one of the major unanswered questions in astrophysics. The findings help explain why some blazars can appear to have slow jets while still producing extremely bright high-energy emissions. More broadly, the study strengthens the link between relativistic jets, magnetic fields, gamma rays and high-energy neutrinos. Researchers say the results provide new clues about how some of the Universe's most powerful natural particle accelerators work and offer important insights for multimessenger astronomy, which combines different types of cosmic signals to study extreme events in space.
