Opera 11.00 Beta 1

Yeah but opera does make good use of the statusbar, its not useless like it was in firefox/ie(basically only used for extension icons in firefox, which are now encouraged to be placed in the toolbar) Opera puts the panel button there which gives you access to bookmarks/history/downloads and all that, opere link and unite controls, displays urls when you mouse over them (like firefox 4 now does in the addressbar) and the handy view box.

I don't really think its bulky, but it could be more streamlined, for example stop/reload/go in the addressbar like firefox would be nice, and remove buttons very few people use by default like fastforward and wand. Its only a few pixels taller vertically then chrome (default setup, no bookmarks bar) while exposing more functionality.

You can move the tabs into the title bar - or inline with the Opera button as it were...(I much prefer it that way)

Copy this into your address bar, and change the value from 20, to something like 10, and then make sure you save it, and then restart. Simples (:

IE doesn't group by domain, it groups by sites opened from.

so if I open a a link in a new tab on neowin, those tabs will have the same color, no matter where that other links goes.

Ah, I stand corrected.

The new feature isn't hardware acceleration... but something quite neat. Got this from one of the comments on Choose Opera.

Try pinning tabs. Also try dragging a tab over another one. 'Stacking' tabs sounds like a neat idea to group your tabs together. I think something similar is in Firefox 4 but this is a simpler way to accomplish the task.

It should look like this:

Nice! This is almost how I wished Firefox's new tab manager should work when I posted on MozillaZine recently.

It makes it more like a part of the browser than a bolted on feature.

The best thing is that pinned tabs can't be closed by accident. That's why I use it when I writer long posts or similar.

I like that too! I really dislike how Chrome's pinned tabs can be Ctrl+W'ed away, which I often do by mistake since I'm so used to keeping things tidy. :s

All this, and Extensions might turn me from Chrome for a while.

Tab stacking looks interesting. I'm going to download the beta and have a play. It might be quite useful for when I have a lot of tabs open, due to carrying out research (which is very frequent, for me).

Currently it is best when you are going to leave a few similar tabs open for awhile because you have to manually stack the tabs, but once they automate some things (such as stacking tabs based on domain or those opened from a specific tab or however they do it) then it will be very useful.

One major problem with stacked tabs though is they have major issues with single-key shortcuts. In Opera, I use 1 to go to the previous tab and 2 to go to the next tab. It makes jumping through side-by-side tabs really quick, but it doesn't play well with stacked tabs yet.....it moves the stacked tab around, makes it disappear and reappear, and do all kinds of other crazy stuff. But, those are all bugs that will hopefully be fixed before final.

Has anyone else come across a possible glitch that involves tabs being "lost?" For example, I had set up a stack with 5-6 technology-themed sites. I ended up closing all but one of them, and now that last remaining tab is still active, as in I can Ctrl+Tab to it, but it's not actually on the tab bar anymore.

So, that means the status bar now no longer takes pixels away from the content, instead just floating over it? I hope so.

There is still a static statusbar and I don't see that changing anytime soon given the amount of stuff Opera puts down there. You can hide it and install an extension that draws a statusbar on the page itself, but it doesn't work with all sites (such as this forum).

Likely a bug similar to using single-key shortcuts to navigate through stacked tabs (it causes the entire stack to disappear and reappear and do all kinds of other crap).

No, he is saying he prefers Opera's implementation, which is still the same as always, a dedicated status bar. I agree with him, I do not like the status bar popping up and down at the bottom when I hover over links, even if it doesn't shrink the page to fit in when it does it, I would rather it stay there and simply show the normal status bar text when it needs to.

Can someone give me a source where you got this from? It wasn't posted officially on the Opera website and google doesn't give much either. The official beta is supposed to be released tomorrow.

The only source is that it is available for download on Opera's FTP. They have been known for posting builds on their FTP before releasing information about them though, it hasn't been officially released but unless theres a major showstopper bug it will most likely be the same as tomorrows official beta release.

How did you change the top button to have no menu text, and also the tab padding from the menu button? Thanks

How did you change the top button to have no menu text, and also the tab padding from the menu button? Thanks

Right click it > customize > appearence and select images only.

And for padding go to opera:config and search chrome. Change the number in chromeintegration area to like 17-18 (any lower will start putting them next to the opera button instead of below)

No source because it's not official yet, it'll probably be official at 9am tomorrow.

Consider it a chance to have an article about it on Neowin before anybody else. As to the source, just write 'An anonymous Neowinian found the following on the Opera ftp server:' :shifty:

There are a screen shots on the first page clearly showing a dedicated status bar that's always visible. I don't understand your confusion.

Giving it another go, I really don't like how the right click menu isn't Windows native yet :(

It's a form of native Windows context menu (or, more accurately, it was styled after one). The last program I remember seeing using it was that wasn't Opera would be Windows Live Messenger (pre-2011 builds). I actually much prefer the one they're using, it saves more vertical space and has better contrast, but it's obviously a matter of taste.

<img>

I really don't understand the gripes about the context menu. maybe it doesn't look exactly like the windows one. but it's not slower, and it's not like you really notice, unless you're looking for "faults"

It uses bright blue highlighting which annoys me, compared to the aero right click menu highlight it's far uglier.

    • WhatsApp slams Isreali firm, NSO Group, for trying to spy on its users by David Uzondu WhatsApp has come out accusing Israeli cyber-intelligence firm, NSO Group, of deploying a fresh wave of highly targeted "spear phishing" attacks against users, which its security teams successfully thwarted. The Israeli firm, according to WhatsApp, ran this operation like its usual one-click phishing campaigns, trying to get people to click malicious links that lead them to external sites. To coordinate the campaign, the spyware vendor created fake test accounts and groups on the messaging app. WhatsApp said it is sharing the specific malicious domains, ikhwancast[.]com, ghazacast[.]com, and fr24cast[.]com, because potential victims need this data to check if they were targeted across other messaging systems or email platforms. The NSO Group is infamous for creating and selling Pegasus, a military-grade commercial spyware capable of silently compromising smartphones simply by sending a message or placing a missed call via apps like WhatsApp or iMessage. Users do not even have to interact with the incoming notification before the infection takes hold. Once Pegasus manages to break in, the spyware harvests private data, letting operators read private messages, emails, photos, and documents. It also tracks precise GPS locations, records keystrokes, activates the device's camera, and monitors live microphone audio. Independent investigations by cybersecurity watchdogs like The Citizen Lab and human rights organizations like Amnesty International have proven that governments use this software to track humanitarian workers, journalists, diplomats, and political dissidents. These findings directly contradict NSO Group claims that clients use the technology to spy on criminals and terrorists only. In late 2021, the U.S. Department of Commerce added the firm to its Entity List, effectively banning the vendor from buying hardware and software from American tech companies. WhatsApp said in its blog post that the spyware vendor violated a permanent court injunction with this new spear-phishing campaign. This injunction, which took effect in 2025, strictly prohibited NSO Group from targeting WhatsApp and its users. The platform is now asking a federal court to hold the firm in contempt.
    • It would be surprising if even 3 year old Apple Watches (and not SE models at that) cannot run watchOS 27. Granted, it doesn't mean it would work as well. We'll see.
    • Apple launches new website for parents and a revamped Screen Time experience by Aditya Tiwari At WWDC 2026, Apple announced new parental control features for iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 to keep kids' device usage in check and keep them safe online. As a parent, you'll get access to a simpler setup experience, Ask to Browse, Time Allowances, and a redesigned Screen Time. You'll be able to pick exactly which apps your child can access on their device, choosing from just a few essential apps, a curated set, or the apps you feel are appropriate. There will be an option to gradually add more apps. Ask to Browse is a new feature that requires kids to request permission before visiting a new website in Safari on iPhone, iPad, or Mac. You can also turn on a setting that requires your kid to ask for approval before connecting with an unknown contact via Messages, FaceTime, or the Phone app. You can manage your child's screen time more effectively with Time Allowances that work across categories, including Games, Entertainment, and Social Media. You can set time limits based on your kid's age and get suggestions informed by expert research. Speaking of expert guidance, Apple added that it's working with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to adapt its Family Media Plan to create a guide parents can refer to when using Apple products. Moreover, the company has also set up a new dedicated website, where you can find tools, resources, and answers to common questions around parental controls and child safety. Apple also allows parents to set daily schedules to manage screen time, configuring access to different apps at different times of the day and across the week. Overall, the Screen Time section has been revamped and provides a bird's-eye view of your kid's average device usage and most-used apps. "For example, to help protect important family moments, parents can quickly limit access during meals, outdoor play, and other times that deserve full attention. If kids need a little extra time to finish something in an app, parents can also easily extend access," Apple said. Apart from these, Communication Safety has been updated to block gore or violent content when detected in shared images or videos. The feature already blurs nudity in Messages and FaceTime calls, and is enabled by default for users under 18.
    • They already threw the Ultra 1st gen under the bus? It really feels like someone screwed up, and that advanced AI features will only be available on the list above but someone screwed up and said that Watch OS 27 in general will only be available for those models. I think they will pull it back. I did see someone also put a snap shot of their series 9 watch being offered the watch os 27 beta. As the backlash online is already in full swing.
