[CA] Internet costs to rise

Recommended Posts

I'm with Teksavvy and my Motorola Surfboard SB5101N doesn't have that cover on the coaxial jack. Granted, I ordered the modem online (through Teksavvy) and installed it myself; however, I didn't have it with rented modems from Rogers.

Actually Vianet runs over the Bell and Eastlink infrastructure and are in the same boat for DSL but just haven't implemented their own monitoring solution yet. Eastlink hasn't implemented bandwidth caps on their 15mb cable yet so that one is safe for now. Vianet does have it's own uplinks to Toronto for it's fiber infrastructure but that's corporate clients only as far as I know.

For now yes they use Bell for DSL and Eastlink for cable, but once they finish rolling out their own infrastructure they will be offering TV, internet and phone to consumers using their own network.

BTW I am on the 15MB plan and have noticed they do EXTREME traffic shaping during peak times. Normally I will get around 1.5mb/s during the day, but come 5pm it goes right down.

nope they must still give 30 days notice and with the new retroactive fees it pushes the dates back more.

If you use up you new cap 10 days into February they may throttle your connection to prevent Rogers from charging your ISP for your usage. There's probably something in your T&C/Usage Policy that says they have the right to control "abuse of their system". Unlimited internet thus gets limited by their definition of "abuse".

We'll see but I don't trust Bell/Rogers to be nice to their wholesale customers when they have been given permission from the CRTC to charge for "excess" bandwidth usage as of February 1st.

yeah i had a surfboard with shaw for years and none of that nonsense. there was aprovision in my contract with shaw not to move the modem myself, but they've never complained about me hooking it up myself in the 4 or 5 times i moved house during that time. although 3 of those times i ended up having a tech come out anyway to install new coaxial in the house and add or remove filters.

and at first it cost $20 cash per house call but later it was free, which was nice,a nd with two shaw customers in the house they were able to test both of us at the same time. kept getting the same guy a few times, and he was a bit weird, either bragging about haxing his phone or psp or w/e or talking about how he had wow on his 52" tv, but he was the best out of the ones i got in terms of the work he did, fast and thorough, and didn't report the one house i was sharing on teh service call for my bro's service with the hacked tv line.

I have a Cogeco modem and I also have that Security cylinder over the coaxial that connects into the modem. Above it is a sticker that mentions that this it is a security device and locked down for 911 reasons. Again I figure its to cover their ass so that no one can complain that when they unhooked their modem, they couldn't call 911 anymore. I dunno.

Also, Its very annoying...the guy hooked it up in one of our cabinets, unknowing about this security lock down clamp. we wanted to move everything out... and couldn't. we had to saw a hole in our cabinet to remove the friggen modem. .

On a similar related note, I just checked out what Xplornet is doing to me. They are not going to be charging more money, they will just be doing HEAVY traffic shaping. Read Below:

Starting March 1st , 2011 the Fair Access Policy on your platform will include the peak-hours rules mentioned above, but also some rules related to daily and monthly bandwidth allowances. If you exceed your daily or monthly allowance, your service will go into “Recovery Mode”. While in Recovery Mode, your speed will be restricted to a maximum of 10-25% of your normal maximum speed.

When you exceed your daily allowance, Recovery Mode will continue for a minimum of 12 hours. At the end of twelve hours, the system will reevaluate your usage over the prior 24 hours. If that usage is below the daily allowance, Recovery Mode will end and your speed will no longer be restricted.

Similarly, when you exceed your monthly allowance, Recovery Mode will continue for a minimum of 5 days. At the end of 5 days, the system will reevaluate your usage over the prior 30 days. If that usage is below the monthly allowance, Recovery Mode will end and your speed will no longer be restricted.

For me it's a daily bandwidth limit of 2GB and a monthly limit of 60GB since I'm on Xtreme. What this essentially means is that I will be in a constant state of only getting 10-25% of my maximum bandwidth because we have 3 people that use the internet all the time.

So far this month we have used just over 37GB of bandwidth and this has been a slow month for us for data usage. That's 3.08 GB per day. In fact, looking at the usage graph on my router, we used a very small amount the first 6 days (probably due to traffic shaping). For instance, the 3rd, which was a normal day for us, we only used 549MB, but the biggest day so far this month we have used 7.5GB (no idea what happened that day). Last month (again looking at my router's log) we used just over 150GB of data. The month before that 230, not including the first 5 days before I set up DD-WRT on the router. How the heck are we supposed to stay under 60?

    • I have updated my Series 9 Watch so I assume there is either a mistake in what was said, or as suggested - the new AI feature set isn’t supported on anything other than those listed above.
    • WhatsApp slams Isreali firm, NSO Group, for trying to spy on its users by David Uzondu WhatsApp has come out accusing Israeli cyber-intelligence firm, NSO Group, of deploying a fresh wave of highly targeted "spear phishing" attacks against users, which its security teams successfully thwarted. The Israeli firm, according to WhatsApp, ran this operation like its usual one-click phishing campaigns, trying to get people to click malicious links that lead them to external sites. To coordinate the campaign, the spyware vendor created fake test accounts and groups on the messaging app. WhatsApp said it is sharing the specific malicious domains, ikhwancast[.]com, ghazacast[.]com, and fr24cast[.]com, because potential victims need this data to check if they were targeted across other messaging systems or email platforms. The NSO Group is infamous for creating and selling Pegasus, a military-grade commercial spyware capable of silently compromising smartphones simply by sending a message or placing a missed call via apps like WhatsApp or iMessage. Users do not even have to interact with the incoming notification before the infection takes hold. Once Pegasus manages to break in, the spyware harvests private data, letting operators read private messages, emails, photos, and documents. It also tracks precise GPS locations, records keystrokes, activates the device's camera, and monitors live microphone audio. Independent investigations by cybersecurity watchdogs like The Citizen Lab and human rights organizations like Amnesty International have proven that governments use this software to track humanitarian workers, journalists, diplomats, and political dissidents. These findings directly contradict NSO Group claims that clients use the technology to spy on criminals and terrorists only. In late 2021, the U.S. Department of Commerce added the firm to its Entity List, effectively banning the vendor from buying hardware and software from American tech companies. WhatsApp said in its blog post that the spyware vendor violated a permanent court injunction with this new spear-phishing campaign. This injunction, which took effect in 2025, strictly prohibited NSO Group from targeting WhatsApp and its users. The platform is now asking a federal court to hold the firm in contempt.
    • It would be surprising if even 3 year old Apple Watches (and not SE models at that) cannot run watchOS 27. Granted, it doesn't mean it would work as well. We'll see.
