DICE discusses returning to Wake Island in Battlefield 3

DICE has posted part 2 of its look at the development of Back to Karkland for Battlefield 3, and it provides a closer look at Wake Island and how it was originally conceived.

According to Lars Gustavsson, who was a producer on Battlefield 1942, Wake Island was originally created based on the actual, real-life island from the Pacific Theatre, but due to a programming error, it ended up being smaller than originally planned.

?The basic premise was that we looked at how real-life Wake Island [from the Pacific Theatre in WWII] looks today,? he said. ?We knew we couldn?t do it to scale, but that kind of one-to-one fidelity wasn?t really of interest to us. Funny thing is, it was in fact downscaled so much due to a decimal error in programming. The map was originally meant to be bigger, but the involuntary downsizing created a very cool and concentrated gaming experience.

?That concentration also comes from the fact that when fighting on land, because of the island?s U-shape, you cannot escape. If there?s a tank in your way, you will have to confront it head-on sooner or later. That?s something we have tried to recreate throughout the Battlefield series: To have some kind of clear frontline.

I used to have a lot of fun playing Wake Island in BF2. It's my second favourite map and I'm so glad it's returning in BF3. Also, I hope I'm not the only person that likes Wake Island for dogfights.

Anyway, here's some concept art:

I don't need no MP footage. Sure it would be nice to feed my desire, but it will make no difference to me in my purchase decision.

I've spent too many hours years playing Battlefield 2 and got too many friends that are Battlefield die-hard fans just like me to skip this one.

Exactly. I literally pre-ordered it the first day it could be pre-ordered.

If you guys wouldn't mind filling out the poll on the Neowin poll station, a link also posted in the MW3 thread; not for spam just for awareness and large poll base.

Thanks guys and gals

That cover art looks a bit poor. I mean it's good, but it doesn't really seem very creative.

Cancelled my pre order because of it.

...you canceled your pre-order because of the cover art? Are you being serious or joking?

I think that particular cover looks bad too, but I wouldn't cancel a pre-order over it.

Good luck with that - its not widescreen and doesn't support x64 or your fancy screen :p

I never had any issues with Battlefield 2 on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. As for widescreen support, that was added with patch 1.5 (see here).

I'm tempted to install it for old times' sake.

Bad call buddy, bad call...

PC is going to be WAR...

Console is going to be a small objective within the whole war...

This...

And BOOOO with Back At Karkand not being at the game with launch. In fact that makes me slightly nervous.

Why so? Whilst I am excited to play on these "classic" maps, I am just as excited to see what new maps they've come up with. I really enjoyed some of the BC2/vietnam maps.

Of course i'll be buying it on the best platform.

    • they couldnt do W11 LTSC so the support lasts longer....
    • The fact that the pref is not enabled by default tells you that what you see is what you get...for now. Hopefully the final version will have all the quirks ironed out.
    • It's enterprise, not consumer. And "...affected scenarios involve third-party software..." Would be good to know that in headline, not way down in the article. Instead, you lead with Windows update, which is not very helpful and misleading, IMHO. Just saying.
