Summer Football Transfers (2011)

It may be a good thing that you are shedding garbage, but you're not replacing anything...

Gervinho seems better than Chamakh.. I like his directness.. Chamakh tried to pass the ball even when inside the box and Gervinho likes to take shots..

We still lack a CB and a LB and a backup for Song...

I read today on ESPN and some other site that we are going for Juan Mata and Alan Dzagoev.. both can be good signings... but we badly need to fix our defence..

Henry is class.

I hope Bendtner leaves. Maybe he'll fit in at Lisbon.

Aguero finalized his Man City move this afternoon. I wish Wenger would spend like this club :p

I'd ask Wenger to do the following:

Buy Leighton Baines, Christopher Samba

This would allow Gibbs to be a backup, and have Djourou and Koscielny as understudies/rotations, and Squillaci...ugh...not sure

Apparently Eboue is about to move to Galatasaray? I think he's a good utility player, and a great character in the locker room.

Is Wenger suiting up Jenkinson to be Sagna's eventual replacement? We'll see.

And Kralik, for a Song backup...who would you recommend? I'd like to snag a good backup but can't really be in the first team. Hard to find that.

Well.. I tht Bendy looked more dangerous than Chamakh ever did.. so I'd rather keep Bendy and let Chamakh go but with Gerv coming in one of them had to go for sure.. I also hope Vela gets more chances to prove himself as we sold JET now as well..

Squid should go, he reminds me of Silvestre (dont know why Arsene's idea of experience in defence is Silvestre, Sol or Squid??)

I also feel Cahill is better than Samba or Baines but anyone of them would be better than playing Kos.. he is a backup and not ready to be a first teamer at this point in his career.

Eboue is a utility player at best but I want us to keep him coz he lifts the spirits in the dressing room after loses and tough games.. Diaby and Denilson on the other should be sold and Arsene should call Almunia a taxi and pack his bags himself!

I dont understand why we let Nordtveit go last year and bought Jenks who is almost same?

Now for the back up of Song.. there are many.. Cana, de Jong, Beram Kayal, Marcos Senna, Fernando Reges, M'bia to name a few.. have you seen Frimpong this year? He looks like a beast and should be given a chance in Emirates cup in Song's position..

gun__1309960418_training06072011_20.jpg?ic=71e07dT

Do you think Frimpong is ready to step up to play league games yet?

I agree on offloading Diaby, Squillaci, Almunia and Denilson (for good...loan is not enough time away from the club)

I'm not sure.. that's why I want to see more of him in Emirates Cup.. it looks like he is physically strong enough not to get bullied but what about skill? Asian tour was ok but I want to see him against South America and Europe..

Manchester United Gabriel Obertan joins Newcastle for 5 years for about 5M?. The boy has talent, but he struggles to show it at the highest level. Good luck to him.

Agreed though he did really well during pre-season for the last 2 years but didn't really break into first team. I hope Obertan does well for the Toons =]

Manchester United say Wesley Sneijder will not join the club

Manchester United have said they do not expect Wesley Sneijder to join the club from Internazionale before the end of the transfer window. Although the Premier League champions did not want to go on the record, the official stance from Old Trafford is that the deal is not going to happen. The information comes from boardroom level, with the chief executive, David Gill, giving his approval for it to be known that United are not actively trying to sign the Dutchman.

That position can feasibly change ? Sneijder could, in theory, drastically lower his salary requirements and Inter may offer him at a reduced fee ? but this is to be regarded as unlikely, according to United. If that remains the case, it threatens to be a significant setback to Sir Alex Ferguson's hopes of building a team with realistic aspirations of closing the gap on Barcelona over the next few years.

From what I saw yesterday I'd be very surprised if we scored against Udinese on Tuesday with the same team.. we need Wilshere back for sure and with Cesc and Nasri going and Wilshere injured we have absolutely no creativity. I felt sometimes players were taking it too easy as well. The seniors know they have no competition for their places.. and Wenger says we do not need any more signings coz we have a "big enough" squad?? We need Mata/Hazard and a CM and a holding midfielder in immediately!! Had Wenger signed these at the start of the window like Sir Alex did. we would have been able to hold Nasri and Cesc for another year.

If we had for example Mata, Hazard and someone like de Jong, Beram Kayal, Marcos Senna or Fernando Reges then Arshavin, Song and others would play harder to cement their place in the starting 11. Also, Ramsey is no where near the level needed to start a game every week and why is Rosicky still here?

Also Wenger not bringing Chamakh on shows how much he trusts Chamakh to influence a game.. I believe Bendy looks more dangerous than Chamakh whenever he comes on and he should stay and Chamakh should be sold along with Rosicky, Diaby, Almunia and Eboue... we are in deep trouble if Wenger sells Cesc and Nasri and believes the youngsters and deadwood seniors can replace them...

finally given up hope...

finally given up hope...

Yeah.. and I dont blame them... Wenger is at fault.. any other manager would sell unhappy players and use the ?57M (?22M for Nasri and ?35M for Cesc) to buy some established players but here Wenger will prob buy 1 or 2 more for a total of ?7M and rest will go to the board. I watched one of his interviews on ESPN a couple of days ago where he said a "good" season for him is finishing in the top 3 and an "acceptable" season is finishing in top 4!! Is that what we have become now? Content with top 3 or 4? A "good" season is not winning things but being close to winning? Having enf cash to be able to raid any team for their best players but not having the will to do so?

Things need changing at the top at Arsenal.. Silent Stan is well.. silent and board are happy with top 4 and CL money that is why they gave Wenger an extension and payrise, would another manager get a payrise for not winning anything for 6 years? Of course not.. unless.. thats what the board wanted (CL money and top 4 to get them that). Hoping Usmanov gets to 30% shares sooner and then we'll see if he can do what he says should be done (more ambition and better players). Hope he would also make Wenger spend or leave and replace him with someone like Guus Hiddink... very frustrating for the fans this!! But we have no other choice coz no one else is good enf for us except Arsenal...

Cesc is gone sad.gif

Arsenal announces today that they have reached an agreement in principle with Barcelona for Cesc Fabregas to move to Spain.

...

Arsenal manager Ars?ne Wenger said: "We have been clear that we didn't want Cesc to leave and that remains the case. However, we understand Cesc's desire to move to his home town club and have now accepted an offer from Barcelona. We thank Cesc for his contribution at Arsenal and wish him future success."

The transfer is subject to the completion of formal legal agreements and registration processes, together with Fabregas agreeing personal terms and passing a medical

Arsenal, Liverpool and Lille chase Yossi Benayoun

Arsenal, Liverpool and French club Lille have all approached Chelsea over the possibility of signing midfielder Yossi Benayoun, BBC Sport understands.

The 31-year-old Israeli posted on Twitter on Monday that he is on the verge of leaving Stamford Bridge.

Arsenal are looking to strengthen their midfield following the departures of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri.

Benayoun joined Chelsea from Liverpool for ?5m in July 2010 but has seen just one minute of action this season.

It has been rumoured Benayoun would be included in an offer from Chelsea for Tottenham playmaker Luka Modric.

"Negotiating with several teams... news soon," wrote Benayoun on Twitter.

Newcastle have also been linked with the Israel captain, who was restricted to 10 appearances for the club last season due to an Achilles injury, which kept him out for six months.

Benayoun spent two years at West Ham before joining Liverpool in 2007.

He scored 29 goals in 134 games for the Reds.

Arsenal are in advanced talks with Werder Bremen's German international defender Per Mertesacker.

The 26-year-old centre-back is captain for the Bundesliga side and reports suggested last week that he wanted to stay at the club.

Arsenal's pursuit of Mertesacker, who is 6ft 6in and has 75 caps for Germany, could end their interest in Bolton defender Gary Cahill.

But the Gunners are set to sign Brazilian left-back Andre Santos.

More to follow.

I'd much rather we signed Cahill but I'll take Per any day over Kos and Djourou...

Yossi is average at best and not what we need for sure.. we need a top player like Cesc was.. someone like Sneijder or even Modric... Hazard can be good too but he is again a youngster and physically weak...

    • @Sayan...I have defended you at various points as I hope you know. This headline however is utter trash...shame on you sir!
    • An actual cosmic "Eye of Sauron" had been looking straight at us all along by Sayan Sen Image by Kovin P. Vasquez via Pexels | Not representative An international team of researchers has solved a long-standing mystery surrounding a distant blazar known as PKS 1424+240, helping explain why it produces some of the brightest high-energy gamma rays and cosmic neutrinos ever observed despite appearing to have a relatively slow-moving jet. The findings were published on June 6 in Astronomy & Astrophysics Letters. The study addresses a broader challenge in astrophysics: understanding how extreme cosmic objects accelerate particles to very high energies and produce very high-energy (VHE) photons and neutrinos. PKS 1424+240 is located billions of light-years from Earth. It has attracted attention for years because it is both a powerful source of VHE gamma rays and the brightest known neutrino-emitting blazar in the sky, according to observations by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. It is also associated with one of the strongest peaks in IceCube's nine-year neutrino sky map A blazar is a type of active galactic nucleus powered by a supermassive black hole that pulls in surrounding matter and launches jets of plasma moving close to the speed of light. What makes blazars unique is their orientation. One of their jets points almost directly toward Earth, making them appear exceptionally bright across the electromagnetic spectrum and allowing scientists to study some of the most extreme physical processes in the Universe. The scientists exclaimed it's like the 'Eye of Sauron' in deep space. Usually, the brightest gamma-ray-emitting blazars are expected to have jets that appear to move very quickly. However, radio observations of PKS 1424+240 suggested that its jet was moving much more slowly, creating a contradiction that became part of a long-running problem known as the "Doppler factor crisis." To investigate, researchers analyzed 15 years of observations from the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), a network of 10 radio antennas spread across the continental United States, Hawaii and St. Croix. Using a technique called Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI), astronomers combine signals from widely separated radio telescopes to create a virtual Earth-sized telescope capable of revealing extremely fine details. The team combined 42 polarization-sensitive radio images collected between 2009 and 2025, creating a much deeper and more detailed view of the jet than had previously been possible. The observations were carried out as part of MOJAVE (Monitoring Of Jets in Active galactic nuclei with VLBA Experiments), a long-running program that studies the brightness, polarization and magnetic field structures of jets produced by active galaxies. The project aims to better understand how activity near supermassive black holes is linked to high-energy radiation and neutrino emission. “When we reconstructed the image, it looked absolutely stunning,” said Yuri Kovalev, lead author of the study and Principal Investigator of the European Research Council-funded MuSES project at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy. “We have never seen anything quite like it — a near-perfect toroidal magnetic field with a jet, pointing straight at us.” The image revealed an unusual geometry. The researchers found that Earth lies almost directly in line with the jet, with a viewing angle of less than 0.6 degrees. In simple terms, astronomers are looking almost straight down the jet. This turned out to be the key to the mystery. Because the jet is aimed almost directly at Earth, a relativistic effect called Doppler boosting dramatically increases its apparent brightness. The study found that this effect boosts the emission by a factor of about 30 while also making the jet appear slower than it actually is. “This alignment causes a boost in brightness by a factor of 30 or more,” said Jack Livingston, a co-author at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy. “At the same time, the jet appears to move slowly due to projection effects — a classic optical illusion.” The nearly head-on view also gave scientists a rare look at the jet's magnetic field. Using polarized radio signals, they detected a clear toroidal, or doughnut-shaped, magnetic field component. The observations suggest the jet carries an electric current and that its magnetic field helps launch, shape and stabilize the flow of plasma. Researchers believe this magnetic structure may also play a key role in accelerating particles to energies high enough to produce both gamma rays and neutrinos. “Solving this puzzle confirms that active galactic nuclei with supermassive black holes are not only powerful accelerators of electrons, but also of protons — the origin of the observed high-energy neutrinos,” Kovalev said. The research was conducted under the MuSES (Multi-messenger Studies of Energetic Sources) project, which investigates how active galactic nuclei accelerate particles and generate different cosmic signals, including light and neutrinos. Scientists say understanding how protons are accelerated and linked to neutrino production remains one of the major unanswered questions in astrophysics. The findings help explain why some blazars can appear to have slow jets while still producing extremely bright high-energy emissions. More broadly, the study strengthens the link between relativistic jets, magnetic fields, gamma rays and high-energy neutrinos. Researchers say the results provide new clues about how some of the Universe's most powerful natural particle accelerators work and offer important insights for multimessenger astronomy, which combines different types of cosmic signals to study extreme events in space.
