Amazon launches new Kindle Paperwhite with 8x more storage; but you can't have it

Amazon is launching a special, localized version of its Kindle Paperwhite e-reader, which offers eight times more storage than the regular device, as well as improved performance. Unfortunately, the new Paperwhite, called the Manga model, will only be available in a limited edition in Japan.

Amazon doesn’t usually advertise the storage size of its Kindle e-readers. The company is quite content to say that its super-popular device holds “thousands of books”, which is enough for most people. However, comic book enthusiasts and manga readers have their own set of necessities, because each comic volume can end up occupying a large amount of storage.

Luckily for them, Amazon is looking at solving this problem with the Kindle Paperwhite 32GB Manga edition. The new device, introduced today by Amazon Japan, is specifically designed for comic or manga enthusiasts. As you can tell by its name the device offers eight times the storage of a regular 4GB Kindle Paperwhite.

What’s even more exciting is that the limited-edition model also features speed improvements with page turning now being 33% faster – an important trait when reading comics.

The new device is available as of right now for 16,280 yen (around $155) or 12,280 (about $120) for Prime subscribers. Unfortunately, as mentioned above, it’s only available in limited numbers in Japan. Here’s hoping that changes in the near future, and Amazon brings this device to more markets.
