AMD "sells out" of 2800+

Not that it's out yet, really.

A US SYSTEM INTEGRATOR said AMD told him that stocks of the 2800+ Athlon XP it announced earlier this week are already sold out, although perhaps a better term would have been put on allocation.

The firm, an integrator of Intel and AMD CAD workstations, had placed a large order for the 2800+ in the wake of the announcement.

He also asked to order 2800+ chips using the delayed "Barton" core.

But he was told by an AMD sales representative:

"The very limited production run of the "thoroughbred" XP2800+ is sold out. AMD will offer production availability of the "Barton" XP2800+ featuring 512K of L2 cache in Q1 of 2003. I will advise once we have samples and availability of the Barton XP2800+."

So, sure enough, the 2800+ Barton is a processor AMD wants to go with.

Meanwhile, AMD had one of its worst days on the stock market for years, after it said it expected poorer sales than expected.

The share price slumped nearly a third to close at $3.63 yesterday afternoon, prompting many analysts to revise their forecasts and also to warn about the liquidity and cash flow of AMD.

Some analysts suggested AMD needed a substantial cash injection to keep it rolling.
