WE REPORTED back in October that AMD had "sold out" of the limited production run of Thoroughbred XP2800+ processors. And they still seem to be rarer than flying pigs or hen's with teeth, suggesting that AMD has missed an entire bunch of opportunities to sell its fastest processor.
AMD produces its quarterly results this week, in which it is expected to show a loss. Not having the high end 2800+ chips must be hurting AMD. We can't spot them on the UK Komplett site but they are available on a Swedish site. We can't spot them on the UK Dabs site, either.
So where is the 2800+? AMD suggests that it is about to reincarnate as the "Barton" 2800+, a chip which will include 512K cache on its die. That is slated to arrive in the first quarter, but we've got quite a few weeks yet before that is ready to roll.
We know from recent roadmaps we've seen that 2800+ MP "Bartons" are expected in the second quarter of this year. Most eyes are pinned on the Athlon 64 and Opteron chips right now
