Apple acquires Zayante

Apple Computer on Thursday announced it bought Zayante, a privately held FireWire technology design company, for an undisclosed sum.

Zayante, based in Scotts Valley, California, specializes in building components for consumer electronics products to use high-speed data technology based on the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.) 1394 standard better known by the Apple trade name FireWire.

The inventors of FireWire left Apple, based in Cupertino, California, to start Zayante in 1996, originally under the name Firefly Inc., according to Zayante's Web site. Firefly merged in 1998 with Macro Designs Inc., a test and measurements company for FireWire products. Zayante currently bills itself as a one-stop shop for building FireWire hardware and software into digital devices, according to its Web site.
