So far, Apple's Self-Service Repair program has only covered iPhones and Macs, but today, the company is expanding it to allow iPad users to fix broken tablets themselves. Starting tomorrow, May 29, 2025, users will be able to order parts, guides, and rental toolkits to fix the following iPads:
- iPad Air M2 and M3
- iPad Pro M4
- iPad mini 7 (A17 Pro)
- iPad 11 (A16)
Parts that will be available for order include displays, batteries, cameras, and ports. With today's announcement, the Self-Service Repair program now covers 65 Apple products, which include iPhones, Macs, and iPads. In addition, later this summer, the Apple Self-Service Repair program will expand to Canada. In total, the program is available in 34 countries.
Another important change affects independent repair shops that have no direct service relationship with Apple. Now, these shops can order genuine Apple parts for iPhone, iPad, and Mac through third-party distributors, such as MobileSentrix in the U.S. and Mobileparts.shop in Europe. Available components include displays, batteries, and charging ports.
Apple devices are infamous for having strict serialization and all sorts of software blocks that make it harder for users and independent shops to repair and service Apple products. Under the pressure from regulators and various consumer rights groups, in 2021, Apple announced the Self-Service Repair program, which lets you order genuine parts from Apple, rent repair tools, and access official repair guides. It also allows you to validate and serialize replaced parts so that your iPhone won't show warnings about an unknown battery or display that you have just purchased directly from Apple.
Apple has not yet announced part prices for DIY repairs. While self-service repair is not necessarily cheaper than in-store repairs, the program lets you recoup some costs by sending the replaced parts to Apple for recycling. You can read more about the expansion of the Self-Service Repair program on the official Apple website.
