Apple refreshes iPad Pro with extra ultra-wide shooter, LiDAR scanner and more

Apple announced today an updated version of the iPad Pro that looks like the 2019 version, but with a number of new features and upgrades in tow. The new tablet comes in 11-inch and 12.9-inch sizes, both of which are available from today via Apple's online marketplace as well as the Apple Store app in the U.S. and more than a couple dozen other countries.

Some of the iPad Pro's key improvements are its secondary camera with an ultra-wide lens and the all-new LiDAR scanner that lets you measure the distance to objects up to 5 meters (16.4 feet) away, the first on any Apple device. This is supposed to aid in augmented reality and depth-sensing capabilities, among others. It's powered by Apple's A12Z Bionic chip with an eight-core GPU and improved thermal architecture.

Another nifty addition to the tablet is the new Magic Keyboard unveiled by Apple today. The backlit keyboard has "a floating design with smooth angle adjustment", which lets it unfold the tablet to a viewing angle that's convenient to users. The standalone keyboard will go on sale in May for $299 for the 11-inch iPad Pro and $349 for the 12.9-inch model. The new iPad Pro also runs iPadOS 13.4, which means it features trackpad support. But Apple says it's a different experience from macOS, with the pointer transforming as you move your finger across the trackpad to highlight UI elements. Also, multi-touch gestures on the trackpad allows for easier and faster system navigation.

Apple also claims its battery life can last up to 10 hours. Another feature of the tablet is its Liquid Retina display with the ProMotion technology for automatically adjusting the display refresh rate up to 120 Hz. The rear camera consists of a 12MP wide camera and another 10MP Ultra Wide camera for zooming out two times to shoot in a wider field of view.

The new iPad Pro will ship in silver and space gray color variants. Its base memory configuration is 128GB, and customers have the option to upgrade to the 256GB, 512GB and 1TB configurations. The 11-inch iPad Pro retails for $799 for the Wi-Fi model and $949 for the Wi-Fi + Cellular model. The 12.9-inch iPad Pro is priced at $999 for the Wi-Fi model and $1,149 for the Wi-Fi + Cellular variant.
