Apple's iTunes about to hit 1 billion app downloads

Apple's iTunes is about to cross the next big milestone by reaching 1 billion (1,000,000,000) app downloads worldwide. The iTunes appstore will be the second in Apple's history to cross the 1 billion download mark, which offers a wide variety of applications to do just about anything on your iPhone or iPod Touch.

Apple is celebrating this event by offering a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card, an iPod touch, a Time Capsule, and a MacBook Pro. Anyone can enter the competition without purchase here, along with the official rules found here.

This isn't the first time Apple has crossed the 1 billion mark, where it had surpassed 1 billion songs back in February 2006, and since then has almost sold and downloaded 7 billion songs. iTunes, which offers more than 10 million songs worldwide, sold more than 200 million television episodes and sold more than 2 million full-length feature films. The store shows no sign of slowing down, but with recent rivals like Amazon sneaking up, iTunes could see fewer served in the future to come.
