Beat Saber developer Beat Games has been bought by Facebook

Facebook has made a new game studio acquisition and it is Beat Games, the developer behind the hit virtual reality game Beat Saber. The Prague-situated studio will be continuing to develop Beat Saber as an independent operation, according to Facebook, though now it will be under the Oculus Studios flag.

The studio's sole VR viral hit, Beat Saber, is a rhythm game that has players wielding lightsabers and cutting up colored blocks to the beat of the music. The game breached the one million copies sold mark in March this year, and is available on SteamVR and Oculus headsets, as well as PlayStation 4 VR systems. Facebook says all currently supported platforms will continue to get updates and new content simultaneously going forward.

Now with Beat Games being under the massive umbrella of Facebook and having access to far more resources, we could see the official song choices expand faster than before. Moreover, regarding the popular modding scene, Facebook said

We understand and appreciate the value that modding brings to Beat Saber when done so legally and within our policies. We’re going to do our best to preserve the value that mods bring to the Beat Saber player base.

It seems this won't be the only VR studio acquisition we will see from Facebook going forward. "We’re exploring many ways to accelerate VR, and we think next year is going to be an incredible one of VR game launches and announcements," said Facebook's director of content Mike Verdu. "This is just the beginning."
