Canonical releases Ubuntu images optimised for Intel IoT devices

Canonical has announced that it has released a version of Ubuntu Core and Ubuntu Desktop 20.04 LTS optimised for Intel IoT (Internet of Things) devices. As things stand, the Intel Atom X6000E Series, Intel Pentium, Celeron N and J Series and Intel 11th Gen Intel Core processors are supported by these optimised images.

With the two firms collaborating, developers and enterprises will benefit from more reliable and secure devices that are long lasting with Canonical’s offer of 10 years of commercial support. The optimised images improve real-time performance, manageability, security and functional safety. They also allow users to be more productive with the improved CPU and graphics performance.

Commenting on the news, John Healy, VP of IOTG Platform Management and Customer Engineering at Intel, said:

“In addition to solving the unique needs of our IoT customers on a free-to-use validated Linux, our collaboration with Canonical lets customers access enterprise support on a long-term supported release when they look to deploy their solutions. This addresses the traditional challenges of maintaining and supporting customized builds for validated Linux-based deployments.”

Canonical has launched a dedicated page on the Ubuntu website for you to download Ubuntu for Intel IoT platforms. Going forward, the two companies will integrate their product roadmaps to provide ‘differentiated offerings’ to customers and regular updates will be applied to these images to integrate the latest software features.
