Chinese firm launches 2000 CPU AMD Opteron supercomputer

Dawning said today that it will fashion the fastest supercomputer in China with a machine capable of delivering 10,000 GFLOPS and using 2000 AMD Opteron microprocessors.

Reports said the Dawning 4000A will use clustering and hypertransport linking together over 2000 Opterons, in a machine that's called the Red Grid.

It looks like Dawning is announcing things a bit early on. According to a widespread leak of internal AMD PR documents, this announcement wasn't due until the 5th of August. The supercomputers are likely to be used for weather forecasting, by research firms, and the like. Dawning – a Chinese company – is claiming all the components and software apart from the CPUs are home grown.
