Facebook has paused development on its Instagram Kids App

Facebook stopped the development of its Instagram Kids app today. During the pause, Facebook will focus on giving parents better control to supervise kids activities along with educating lawmakers.

New Instagram safety measure where users are asked to provide their birthday

Facebook wanted to give an update on an upcoming service called Instagram Kids today but instead decided to stop the work and refocus. Facebook still believes the product is the right thing to do and will use the extra time to work with concerned parents and policymakers to prove that.

The app is meant to address the growing trend of kids getting digital devices at a young age. Facebook believes it’s better for parents to be able to give their kids access to an Instagram designed just for them allowing parents to supervise and monitor the experience.

Critics of the product may view this pause as an acknowledgment that the product is a bad idea. The reality is kids are already online, and Facebook believes Instagram Kids will offer a better option than where we are today.

Giving parents control of the experience is most important. During this pause, Facebook will continue to work on its existing tools to allow parents to monitor those aged 13 and over. Facebook didn’t state when or if work would resume on Instagram Kids.
