Gemini gets a splash of Google's signature rainbow, but some apps still waiting

Google Gemini is getting a new coat of paint. Finally, the red, yellow, and green, that Google is known for, are joining the party.
The July 2025 Google Gemini icon

Google has just updated the icon of its Gemini app on its Google Play Store listing and X account, presumably this change will rollout to other locations too, such as the Gemini favicon soon, but we haven’t seen it yet.

The new icon does away with the blue and purple-themed star and replaces it with a rainbow-themed star to match the rest of the Google suite of apps. The amount of time that the icon has looked distinctly un-Google-like reflects pretty well how long the company took to embrace AI when ChatGPT was released.

Google’s Search business is a big part of its advertising revenue and AI is a huge threat to search engines. As time has gone on and Google has embraced AI in search and many other products there is a general feeling that it’s more comfortable with products like Gemini and now the icon is getting a new coat of paint to really fit in.

Google’s multi-colored theme, dominated by red, blue, green, and yellow, have been prominent since the earliest days of the company. Back in May 2025, Google made a big change to its “G” logo which swapped out the solid color changes to a blurred transition. The new Gemini icon takes after this with a predominant blue color but blurring into red, yellow, and green on the left side.

While the Play Store and Gemini account displays the new Gemini icon, it’s not everywhere yet, such as the website’s favicon, or the icon on Android devices. Users should expect to see the change roll out in the coming days or weeks. There’s no need to worry too much either about this refreshed icon because it’s not going to change the functionality of the app in any way.

Are there any other apps in the Google ecosystem that you think need a Googley coat of paint?
