Google announced today that London is their latest Cloud Platform region and it’s here to provide compute, big data, and networking services to all its customers.
While Google’s cloud platform still trails behind Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure, Google is undoubtedly stepping up its game to provide better services and to add to the decentralization of the geographical data cloud clusters.
The brand new London GCP region is the tenth worldwide and the second one in Europe (Belgium being the original trend-setter) and is available today with the codename ‘Europe-west2’. The new region is divided into three different zones each of which will provide a specific set of services:
According to Google’s internal testing, they claim between 40% and 82% lower round-trip latency for users that are based in London and neighboring cities like Dublin, Edinburgh, and Amsterdam in comparison to the Belgium region where the next closest Google Cloud Platform facilities are located. Undoubtedly, this move will provide businesses in the UK with a strong incentive to join the Google cloud platform.
The expansion agenda of the tech giant is not limited to London and the UK as Germany, the Netherlands, and Finland are all already strategically selected as future locations with the aim to create a robust and efficient cloud network throughout Europe.
