Halo Infinite surprise update adds a roguelike-inspired co-op mode

A free content update has landed for Halo Infinite months after it entered maintenance mode, and it's for co-op fans.

The 2021-released Halo Infinite received four years of content updates towards its free-to-play multiplayer portion before Halo Studios (formerly 343 Industries) pulled support. However, a fresh content update has now rolled out for the shooter without any prior announcements, and it's adding a brand-new Firefight game mode.

Firefight is Halo's cooperative horde mode, and Halo Infinite received support for it years back. Now, the studio has brought in Firefight: Gauntlet, which has persistent upgrades, a five-arena mission structure, and randomized aspects for replayability.

The mode has four players entering the battle arena, which automatically generates a random order for going through all five of them. Enemy types, champions they must defeat to progress, and even weapon options will all be randomized as well for each run.

"Each battle arena is defended by endless waves of enemy forces, which can only be stopped by defeating the arena’s champions," says Halo Studios about the new mode. "Waves within a battle arena will become more intense over time and, if players take too long to defeat the arena’s champions, the Harbinger will enter the fray too. As players progress through the map’s five battle arenas, the difficulty level of the enemy AI will also increase."

Between each arena, players get a 30-second rest inside a hub area, where they can upgrade their Spartan attributes like damage, shield and health recovery times, speed, and damage resistance to keep for later rounds. This is also where they can grab a power weapon and power equipment that's available for the current run.

The mode introduces a new “AI Aggro” system as well, which lets players see who is being targeted by the enemy waves more easily with a visual effect. The target changes depending on how each player is performing, and this attention can be reduced by using a Shroud Screen.

To make jumping into The Gauntlet easier, Halo Studios has added it as a new featured playlist focused on the mode to Halo Infinite matchmaking until May 19. Following that, players can find it in the standard Firefight playlist.

The new mode can be played on the maps Munera Platform H6 and Munera Platform W4 that have also been added with this update. These will explore arenas that feature a volcanic UNSC base, a Flood-infested Forerunner facility, a Banished excavation site, and more.
