iPhone gets dethroned by Research In Motion's BlackBerry

After being ranked #1 phone in the third quarter in U.S for 2008, the iPhone has finally fallen to Research In Motion's BlackBerry Curve 83xx.

Based on the U.S. consumer sales of smartphone handsets in NPD's smartphone market update, the first quarter of 2009 was taken by Research In Motion's BlackBerry Curve 83xx. Not only did BlackBerry take the number one spot, but it also secured the third and fourth spot in the top 5 with its handsets.

The ranking of the top five phones in the U.S. went as follows:

RIM BlackBerry Curve (all 83XX models)
Apple iPhone 3G (all models)
RIM BlackBerry Storm
RIM BlackBerry Pearl (all models, except flip)
T-Mobile G1

Some reasons behind the fallen iPhone sales could be behind the recent rumors of Apple's new up and coming third iPhone into the market, something many consumers may be patiently waiting for this summer.

This trend is not just good news for Research In Motion, but for wireless carriers as smartphone sales now account for 23% of all sales in the U.S., up from 17% in the first quarter of 2008.
