Although Microsoft is actively working on a new Outlook app, the general consensus so far is that it is "hot garbage". It seems that the company is aware of this sentiment, which is why it is still planning on introducing new features to the classic Outlook app, with one being the ability to schedule full-fledged meetings through the Copilot Chat experience available in the side pane. However, it now appears that classic Outlook customers are dealing with a bug that may be causing headaches for many.
Essentially, recipients of "Encrypt Only" emails are not able to open them after updating to Current Channel Version 2511 (Build 19426.20218). They will be greeted with a message: "This message with restricted permission cannot be viewed in the reading pane until you verify your credentials. Open the item to read its contents and verify your credentials." But once they try to open the email to verify their credentials, they will only find the attachment message_v2.rpmsg, with no option to see their encrypted content.
While this is obviously annoying for many customers, the good thing is that the Outlook development team is investigating this issue actively. For the time being, the Redmond tech giant has two workarounds for those impacted.
The first workaround is to discourage users from encrypting emails using the File > Encrypt UX. They should instead use the Options > Encrypt, and the choose Encrypt or Do Not Forward. These configurations behave quite differently, check out their details here.
The other mitigation involves rolling back to a previous build and re-sending their email. Do this by opening an elevated Command Prompt window and then executing the command:
"%programfiles%\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\ClickToRun\officec2rclient.exe" /update user updatetoversion=16.0.19426.20186
Microsoft has not detailed a timeline for a fix yet, but considering that it is actively investigating the issue, we should expect a patch to land soon.
