Microsoft Flight Simulator is getting VR support, Steam launch also confirmed

Microsoft and Asobo Studio have confirmed that the upcoming Flight Simulator will receive virtual reality headset support via a free update. Steam pre-orders are going live today as well.

The new Flight Simulator from Microsoft and Asobo Studio will be receiving virtual reality play support following its launch next month. The announcement joins the implementation of TrackIR support that happened yesterday, with the developer saying the features have been some of the most requested by the community.

The free VR support update will arrive alongside the launch of HP's upcoming Reverb G2 headset, a device Microsoft and Valve have collaborated on. The product does not have a release date attached to it yet. The game will get its bearings on the G2 before being available to other VR systems, though it's unclear how long will it take to add support for additional headsets following the initial launch.

Asobo is also working with sim accessory manufacturers like Honeycomb Aeronautical, Logitech G, Thrustmaster, and Virtual Fly to improve Flight Simulator support, including for upcoming systems such as the Bravo Throttle Quadrant and TCA Sidestick. As post-launch content, the developer plans to introduce free world updates, themed DLC packs, and more, with an updated roadmap being prepared behind the scenes.

While PC pre-orders for Flight Simulator went up earlier this month, it was only for the Windows 10 release of the title. Today, Microsoft will be bringing the facility to Steam as well, offering pre-orders for the Standard, Deluxe, and Premium Deluxe editions. Just as on Windows 10 and Xbox Game Pass for PC, Flight Simulator will be available on August 18, 2020 on Steam.
