Microsoft shares official group policy and its requirements to remove Windows 11 Copilot

Earlier this month Microsoft released its latest Windows 11 Patch Tuesday update under KB5083769 on versions 25H2 and 24H2. The patch brings new features like a new built-in internet speed test and remote desktop changes, though the latter has probably led to issues as well as confirmed by the company.

Aside from those, Microsoft has confirmed another feature with this release that was not part of the changelog. The company has published its new group policy to help remove Copilot from the Pc. The company first announced the feature back in January earlier this year.

Recently, Microsoft has been seen as perhaps reconsidering adding its AI assistant everywhere on Windows. There is a broader effort from the company to improve its desktop OS and for example, it recently it finally released several long-requested Windows update features, and is also promising performance improvements across the OS with its new planned changes.

About the new policy, the company writes: "The new RemoveMicrosoftCopilotApp policy setting allows you to uninstall Copilot from devices in your organization in a non-disruptive way, targeted way." The company has also shared the requirements to apply the policy as it adds that users and devices have to meet the following conditions:

• Microsoft 365 Copilot is also installed.
• Copilot wasn’t installed by the user.
• Copilot wasn’t launched in the last 28 days.

In a separate support document, Microsoft has explained that users and admins alike can choose to reinstall Copilot if they want to. As mentioned above, the policy was released with the latest Patch Tuesday update which means systems must have the KB50837609 Windows 11 25H2, 24H2 update installed.
