Microsoft's Gaming Copilot AI is being retired on Xbox

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma is winding down the Copilot AI assistant features that were being integrated into Xbox consoles and app.

Following months of insider testing, Microsoft began rolling out another variant of its Copilot AI assistant to its gaming division in September of 2025. Dubbed Gaming Copilot, this was framed as a way for gamers to get help with difficult sections in games and give out information on what's being played. Now, while it looks like Microsoft is going full steam ahead on Copilot for most of its product lines, Xbox won't be one of them.

The recently appointed Microsoft Gaming CEO Asha Sharma revealed on a social media post today that as part of the latest changes happening within the Xbox wing, Copilot is being wound down. This will affect Copilot that's available on the Xbox app on mobile as well as the Copilot on console project that is in the development phase.

"Xbox needs to move faster, deepen our connection with the community, and address friction for both players and developers," said Sharma on a post on X today. "As part of this shift, you’ll see us begin to retire features that don’t align with where we’re headed. We will begin winding down Copilot on mobile and will stop development of Copilot on console."

While this sounds like the end for the mobile and console versions of the Xbox Gaming Copilot, Sharma did not mention the Game Bar version that currently exists on Windows. This version is also still in beta, and it can be turned off from the widgets menu of the Game Bar. It's unclear if this Gaming Copilot for PC gaming will also go away in the future, removing the feature from Xbox services entirely.

Sharma also made official the change in Xbox leadership on the social media post, which was initially revealed earlier today via a leaked Microsoft memo. "Today, we promoted leaders who helped build Xbox, while also bringing in new voices to help push us forward," she added. "This balance is important as we get the business back on track."

This change saw big names from the Microsoft CoreAI team jumping over to Xbox to oversee multiple areas like engineering, development tools, design, and subscriptions.
