OpenAI today announced workspace agents in ChatGPT, a new research preview feature that allows teams to build and share AI agents within their organization. The startup mentioned workspace agents as the next step beyond GPTs. OpenAI confirmed that GPTs are not going away for now; however, in the future, OpenAI will make it easier to convert existing GPTs into workspace agents.
Workspace agents are powered by Codex and run in the cloud, enabling them to continue working even when the user is away. These agents can gather context and take action across connected tools, including third-party apps like Slack. Users can also schedule agents to run automatically or deploy them in messaging apps like Slack to respond to incoming requests. Since these agents have memory and can be corrected over time, they will improve as teams continue using them.
To create an agent, users can click the "Agents" section in the ChatGPT sidebar and describe a workflow their team handles often using natural language. ChatGPT then helps define the steps, connect tools, add skills, and test the setup.
OpenAI highlighted the following example workflows that teams can turn into workspace agents:
- Software Reviewer: Checks employee software requests against policy, recommends next steps, and files IT tickets.
- Product Feedback Router: Monitors Slack, support channels, and public forums, then turns feedback into prioritized tickets and summaries.
- Weekly Metrics Reporter: Pulls data, creates charts, writes summaries, and shares reports.
- Lead Outreach Agent: Researches inbound leads, scores them, drafts follow-up emails, and updates CRM systems.
To make it easy for users to get started, OpenAI is offering templates for common areas such as finance, sales, and marketing. For enterprise customers, OpenAI has provided admin controls and monitoring features to manage workspace agents effectively.
Workspace agents are now available in research preview for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Teachers for free until May 6, 2026. After that, they will be available via credit-based pricing.
