A few years ago, Perplexity splashed onto the scene with its answer engine that behaved a lot like ChatGPT, but had access to the internet (ChatGPT and other LLMs didn't do this at the time). Then the company launched an AI-centric web browser called Comet for users on desktop. Now, that same browser has launched on Android.
With the launch of the browser on Android, Perplexity has redesigned the mobile experience from the ground up, rather than forcing the desktop version onto mobile.
"Building an AI-first browser has required deliberate work for each OS and every form factor," Perplexity said. "We didn’t want to just force a desktop experience onto mobile. Instead, Perplexity has redesigned the mobile web browser for the new age of the internet."
Comet on Android comes with several unique features that set it apart from the likes of Chrome and Firefox. One of the key features that you'll find yourself turning to a lot is the personal AI assistant that is accessible with just one tap and allows you to ask questions and give it tasks. Comet Assistant includes expanded reasoning as well, so you can see exactly what actions it is taking and even step in if needed.
Assistant is not only easy to access, it also comes with a voice mode, allowing you to chat with it to find information across all open tabs. Traditional web browsers do not even come close to offering this level of AI integration, though, they will probably get pushed in this direction given the work that Perplexity is doing.
Another useful feature is the ability to summarize information across all of your open tabs, not just the page you have open. This can help you extract information from pages quicker, boosting your productivity. Finally, the browser helps you avoid spam and pop-up ads with a built-in ad blocker. If you trust a website, such as Neowin, just add it to your whitelist so that the sites you like can keep the lights on.
Unlike other browsers which tend to have AI assistants that explicitly need to be invoked, Comet's Assistant is always working in the background to block distractions and assist with tasks. Comet is able to remember open tabs and current work to give you fast, contextual answers or summaries directly on any webpage without needing to switch apps. It also acts as your personal assistant for various tasks, including research, simplifying, shopping, or learning.
While the browser is packed with very interesting features, there have been concerns raised just a few months ago that malicious prompts on webpages could hijack Comet, so ensure you take precautions.
