Revamped sharing experience for Power BI to be launched soon

Last month, Microsoft launched Power Fx, its first low-code programming language for logic customization across the Power Platform. A week or so before that, the tech giant introduced the On-premise data gateway update for Power BI, which as usual arrived a little while after the release of the Power BI Desktop update for that month.

Today, Power BI Program Manager Sujata Narayana has unveiled a new report sharing experience for Microsoft's data visualization platform, set to make sharing "as easy and familiar as sharing Office".

Through this new sharing capability, shareable links will be able to be generated for people in the organization (excluding guest users), people with existing access, and specific users. This form of sharing comes in addition to the already available direct access sharing. The sharing interface is quite similar to what existing users of the Microsoft 365 suite of applications are familiar with.

As far as access permissions are concerned, read access will provided to people in the organization, and specific users that the reports are shared with. Access for reshare permissions and build permissions will be modifiable though. For the former, they will be enabled by default, while for the latter, they will be excluded by default. People with existing access, meanwhile, will not get any access permissions to the reports.

A tenant admin setting has also been made available to enable or disable sharing links to people in the organization for the entire organization - which is the default setting -, or for (or excluding) specific security groups. This setting is available in the Admin portal. Users for whom this type of access will be disabled will have the option of sharing with 'people in the organization' greyed out.
