Sony launches PlayStation Messages app for iOS and Android

Just over two years after launching its companion PlayStation App on iOS and Android, Sony has spun off the chat functions from there into its new dedicated 'PlayStation Messages' app.

The PlayStation App has been available on iOS and Android for a couple of years now, allowing gamers to browse the Store, view guides and manuals, and even take advantage of 'second-screen' functionality on supported games.

Until now, the app has also offered social features, including the ability to chat with friends and fellow gamers - but these have now been spun off into their own standalone application.

The store description for the new PlayStation Messages app - which is also available on both iOS and Android - highlights the functionality that it offers:

  • Check your Friends List to instantly see who's online and what they're playing.
  • Send text or voice messages as well as photos and stickers to your friends or a group with up to 100 players.
  • Quickly access your favourite message groups from your favourites list.

...and as you've probably guessed, the app can only be used by those with a PlayStation Network account.
