Sony tells VAIO owners not to upgrade to Windows 10 until drivers are ready in October

Last year, Sony sold its VAIO business unit to an investment fund, but the Japanese tech giant continues to provide support for the devices that it previously sold. Like other Windows PCs, those offered from Sony are now entitled to Microsoft's free Windows 10 upgrade offer - but Sony itself is warning users not to upgrade yet.

On the company's support site, an ominous warning advises users that you should "wait to upgrade your PC until the drivers are ready" for your specific model. As Sony explains:

We are testing supported models and will be providing the results as quickly as possible. We plan to release Windows 10 upgrade information and, for Windows 8 and 8.1 models, drivers, applications and detailed information on the schedule below based on the operating system originally installed on the PC.

The schedule states that the company will provide further information this month for those wishing to upgrade PCs originally sold with Windows 8 and 8.1:

However, detailed upgrade instructions, along with those all-important Windows 10-ready drivers and applications, won't be released until October for VAIO PCs that originally came with Windows 8.1 onboard, and November for those that launched with Windows 8 pre-installed.

Worryingly, it's worth noting that Sony didn't mention any plans to release Windows 10 drivers and apps for Windows 7 devices, which are also covered by Microsoft's free upgrade offer. Instead, these devices are mentioned under a separate schedule:

Notably, no delivery date is even hinted at for drivers and apps for Windows 7 PCs; Sony has committed only to delivering "Information regarding Limitation and Issues" for these devices sometime this month. Call us cynical, but that sounds an awful lot like Sony's support of Windows 10 on older Windows 7 PCs will be half-hearted, at best.
