Space dogfighting game Star Wars: Squadrons unveiled, comes with VR support

Sticking to the schedule announced last week, EA today unveiled Star Wars: Squadrons, an upcoming first-person space dogfighting game made by its EA Motive studio. Catch the debut trailer above. The game will offer both a single-player campaign - following an original story set after the events of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi - and multiplayer modes.

The campaign will follow two customizable protagonists, giving players the chance to experience the story from both sides of the conflict. Meanwhile, the 5v5 multiplayer battles will take place across various locations in the Star Wars universe like Yavin Prime and the shattered moon of Galitan.

Players will have customizable starfighters available to them from the New Republic and Imperial fleets, letting them change the looks and abilities of the machines. It was confirmed that it will only be possible to earn customizations through gameplay.

Squadrons is coming to PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. The PC version will be distributed through Origin, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. In addition, virtual reality support will be in place on PC and PlayStation 4 from launch, letting VR headset owners fly into the fray in a much more immersive environment. Cross-play will be enabled across all platforms.

Star Wars: Squadrons is landing on October 2 with a $39.99 price tag, and pre-orders are available now. The publisher will have a lot more to show, of Squadrons and others, during the EA Play Live 2020 event, which will be opening its digital doors on June 18 at 4PM PT.
