Spotify introduces SongDNA, a new feature rolling out globally

Spotify says its new Premium-only feature, SongDNA, is designed to help you learn about the "creative connections behind the music you love."

Spotify has started the global rollout of SongDNA, a Premium-only beta feature that allows you to explore the "intricate network of people and creative connections behind the music you love."

With SongDNA, you can learn about virtually everyone and everything that was involved in making a song, including its writers, producers, samples, and even interpolations. It shows you the covers a song has inspired, creating a full picture of a track's creative journey. Unlike a simple credits list, the feature is designed to let you dig deep into the relationships between different artists and their work across genres and time periods.

The feature can be found in the "Now Playing" view, basically built like an interactive map of connections. After tapping the SongDNA card for a supported track, you can see all the collaborators. From there, you can tap on a specific producer's name to see other artists that person has worked with, and then tap on those ones to see who they worked with. It just goes on and on and on.

Not all songs are supported, though, and Spotify said that artists and teams have the freedom to manage "how their musical story is told" directly through the Spotify for Artists platform:

The connections you see in SongDNA are powered by a combination of information we receive from artists and their teams, supplemented by community-sourced data.

As we continue to evolve this experience in beta, eligible artist and label teams can review and manage the components of SongDNA in Spotify for Artists, ensuring they have a direct hand in how their musical story is told.

SongDNA may remind you of "About this Song," another Premium feature, launched last month, that provides behind-the-scenes details and context for individual tracks. The feature uses swipeable story cards to give you the inspiration and meaning behind the music. It is available on both Android and iOS devices for subscribers in the US, UK, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and Australia.
