After over a decade of development and almost a billion dollars raised via crowdfunding, Star Citizen is seemingly nearing its release date, at least for the campaign. However, the latest announcement by Cloud Imperium Games isn't for an alpha update or a release date, it's an alert regarding a data breach that has affected user data.

In a service alert posted on the official website, Cloud Imperium Games has said that a "systematic and sophisticated attack" had hit its systems on January 21, 2026. The attackers had gained access to the studio's backup systems that had included "limited access to users’ personal data."

"CIG acted quickly to contain the activity and block further access to this data and CIG systems, and we have refreshed security settings to ensure that there is no threat to our games or our users," says the studio. "While CIG is still monitoring the situation, we do not consider that the incident poses a risk to the safety of our users."

According to the company, the affected data had not included any financial or payment information, and passwords also remain safe. However, it confirmed that account details like "metadata, contact details, username, date of birth, and name" have been breached. It's unclear what this metadata included.

"We are closely monitoring the situation and our systems to ensure that no further incidents occur," added the company. "We are also taking steps to assess and detect whether any data that was accessed is released publicly. At this stage, there are no indications of any such activity."

Star Citizen players who have questions about the breach or are suspicious about their account activities are urged to contact Cloud Imperium Games via the customer support system over here.
