Surface RT software update improves WiFi and Type/Touch covers

Microsoft has launched a new software update for its Surface RT tablet running Windows RT that will improve, among other things, its WiFi and Type and Touch Cover features.

Microsoft has released a number of automatic software updates today for various products. We have already reported on the security updates coming for Windows 8, Windows RT and various versions of Internet Explorer. We have also reported that IE10 for Windows 8 and RT will now have its integrated Flash support turned on as the default.

Today, Microsoft revealed via their support forums that there will be quite a few software improvements today for its Surface RT tablet running on Windows RT. The update will have some more improvements for the WiFi features of the tablet, something which Microsoft has had issues with ever since the Surface RT first launched in October.

Specifically, the Surface RT update today has "fixes to Wi-Fi reliability allowing for better roaming and improvements to 'Limited' connectivity scenarios", according to the patch notes. It will also improve the typing experience when using the tablet's optional Type and Touch covers "on soft surfaces and when devices and keyboard are lying flat."

There have been some sound issues addressed in this new update, such as problems with the tablet's integrated volume button along with an issue where the Surface RT was muting at random. Finally, the trackpad of the Surface RT tablet has also gotten some unnamed improvements.
