In a bid to curb the COVID-19 pandemic, the ride-hailing services Uber and Ola have suspended all ride options in New Delhi till March 31, complying with the local state government's order to lock down the Indian capital (via Tech Crunch). Ola, an Indian-based ridesharing company, is also limiting ride options throughout the country. Uber informed its customers in New Delhi:
In compliance with the government guidelines, we are temporarily suspending all Uber services in your city. This means that Uber rides services will not be available until further notice.
On Saturday, Uber suspended the shared-ride options throughout the country. While Uber has wholly suspended the shared-ride options, its rival Ola stated that it would also limit ride options in the country, offering a “minimal network of vehicles to support essential services.” A company spokesperson said:
Ola will continue to encourage citizens to limit travel only for essential emergency needs as per the Government’s directive. We will enable a minimal network of vehicles to support essential services in cities, wherever applicable, as part of this national effort to reduce the contagion of COVID-19.
After governments worldwide have enforced travel restrictions to prevent further spread of the infection, Uber and Lyft have also suspended some of their rides in the U.S.
