Walmart launches its own payment system

Not content with existing options, the retailer is introducing its own app-based payment system appropriately named 'Walmart Pay' but it will only work at the company's own stores.

In the face of a growing number of mobile payment options, Walmart has opted to create its own. Launching in selected stores this month and expanding nationally by mid-2016, Walmart Pay will sit inside the existing Walmart app on iOS and Android.

Unlike Apple Pay and Google Play, Walmart is relying on QR codes to finalize payments in-store rather than using NFC technology. By selecting Walmart pay at any register, customers will then scan a QR code. Payment is then automatically processed using any major credit, debit, pre-paid or Walmart gift card the customer has previously entered into the app.

Customers will be able to prioritize payment types, for example using gift cards before credit cards. Mixed payment types, including Walmart Pay and Cash, can also be used in a single transaction. Receipts will be stored within the app.
