Xbox 360 tops US console sales again in September

It's the same old, same old for Microsoft in terms of staying on top of the retail game console sales in the US. The company announced today that, for the month of September 2012, it sold 270,000 units of the Xbox 360 console. This is the 21th straight month that the Xbox 360 console has sold more than any other current generation console in the US.

The official Microsoft blog also says that gamers spent a total of $380 million in the US in the month of September on Xbox 360 hardware and software, more than the PS3 and the Wii combined. However, the numbers for September 2012 are lower than what Microsoft reported for September 2011, when it said it sold 438,000 Xbox 360 consoles and generated a total of $534 million in revenue.

While Microsoft may be king of the US retail console games hill, overall, the game industry continues to suffer from lower sales. Gamesindustry.biz reports that, according to the NPD Group, overall revenues came in at $848.3 million for the month of September, down 24 percent compared to the same period a year ago.

Electronic Arts had the number one and number three best selling games last month, with Madden NFL 13 and FIFA Soccer 13, respectively. Borderlands 2 came in at number 2, while the Nintendo 3DS exclusive game New Super Mario Bros. 2 was in fourth place. In fifth was the PC exclusive game Guild Wars 2 from NCsoft and ArenaNet.
