Xiaomi announces 200W "HyperCharge" technology for smartphones

Xiaomi fast charging technoloy

Smartphone brands have been hard at work to reduce the time it takes to juice up your phone batteries. Xiaomi in particular introduced a 120W charging system on the Mi 10 Ultra last year. If that wasn't impressive enough, the Chinese brand has now unveiled its "HyperCharge" technology with peak charging speeds of a whopping 200W.

The announcement comes from Xiaomi's Twitter handle, which claims to fully charge a custom-built Mi 11 Pro in mere eight minutes. The innovation isn't limited to wired charging either as the company also asserted 15 minute charging time if you opt for wireless (induction) charging. As proof, Xiaomi has shared a timelapse video of the charging process in the same tweet.

To put things in perspective, the iPhone 12 Pro Max peaks at 20W fast charging. The Cupertino-based brand doesn't even bother shipping a charger inside the box, but that's a topic for another day. Samsung's latest Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G supports 25W charging, which makes it one of the slowest flagships from the Android camp.

Currently, Xiaomi's closest competitor is BBK electronics, the company behind OnePlus, Oppo, Vivo, Realme, and iQOO. Last year, Oppo showcased 125W technology. Its sister brand Vivo sells the iQOO 7 with 125W fast charging in its home country China. It will be interesting to see how soon BBK electronics will manage to catch up with Xiaomi's 200W "HyperCharge" technology. Of course, we can't wait to see these developments to end up on our smartphones. However, let's hope that this mad race for fast-charging won't degrade batteries too "fast".
