You can now use Android Auto right from your phone

Google today released a standalone Android Auto app in the Google Play Store, which allows drivers to use the feature, even if their car doesn't have a touchscreen that's designed for it.

Have you ever wanted to use Android Auto but don't have a car with one of those fancy touchscreens? Today might very well be your lucky day, as you can now download a standalone app to run the feature right from your phone.

Google promises that Android Auto will bring you useful information while you're on the road, right on the home screen. These include suggested destinations, upcoming appointments, and weather conditions; it's similar in function to Android Wear, which is based on the idea of showing the user what they want to see before they ask for it.

Of course, there is plenty of other functionality. Drivers can use the feature for navigation, listening to music, and making calls. Voice interaction is a key feature as well, as it's not always legal to interact with a touchscreen while you're driving.

As you always have with Android Auto, you'll need a phone that's running Android 5.0 Lollipop or better. You can grab the app right here.
