Dell XPS 15 unboxing and first impressions: Power and productivity

The truth is that I've always had a bit of a crush on Dell's XPS 15 laptops. If you're looking for something that's portable and packs a lot of power, there simply aren't a lot of options out there that aren't built for gaming (and gaming laptops can be super-heavy).

The processor in the XPS 15 that I was sent is an Intel Core i7-7700HQ, which is the company's seventh-generation 'Kaby Lake' high-powered quad-core chip. Truth be told, there aren't a lot of quad-core laptops out there. Apple's 15-inch MacBook Pro also uses a quad-core chip, and there are a couple of others. All smaller laptops, and many 15-inch devices use the U-series, which is Intel's low power processors; it's worth noting that the eighth-generation U-series chips are quad-core, but they'll still be lower powered.

And then there's the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 with 4GB GDDR5 graphics, which really adds onto the power of this machine. That GPU powers a 15.6-inch 4K UHD InfinityEdge touchscreen, which looks stunning, given the narrow bezels on all sides.

All of this comes in a package that's 17mm thick and weighs 4.5 pounds. While gaming laptops can come in at over 10 pounds, the XPS 15 is better designed for power on the go. Whether it's video editing, capturing HDMI content, or anything else, it's easy to carry this thing around and get power-heavy tasks done from wherever you are.
