[Definitive] Sony PS3 Thread

To clear up the memory misconceptions:

The Xbox 360 has two kinds of memory:

512MB of GDDR3 memory @ 700mhz - This uses an SGI/Xbox1-like UMA "Unified Memory Architecture" so that both the CPU and GPU can access it directly. This gives the developer freedom to use that space for textures as well as general program data.

10MB of eDRAM built into the GPU - This serves as the Xbox 360's framebuffer and provides astounding bandwidth and incredibly low-latency access. This is what will make the 360's uber-Anti Aliasing work.

The PS3 has two kinds of memory, according to the GameSpot article:

256MB of Rambus' XDR memory. This is apparently for the exclusive use of the CPU.

256MB of GDDR memory @ 700mhz. This is apparently the framebuffer + texture cache for the GPU.

So wait a second - 3 ethernet ports on the back of that? And I read before that it'll connect wirelessly with the PSP, but will it also be able to connect to my wireless router? I mean, that's the problem I have with the PS2 - I'm not running cat5 in the living room - my wife would die...

you're right. lol, it has some BIG performance differences when comparing single percision and double percision calculations.

The one processor is called the Cell. There is one PowerPC Processing Element (PPE), and eight Synergistic Processing Elements (SPE).

When Sony/IBM said the processor would have 6-8 "cells", they were referring to the SPEs. Each one is considered a "cell" - and the idea is that the PPE can be outfitted with varying numbers of "cells" which are produced more or less seperately.

    • After enabling it in about:config, customize, density, compact; the toolbar/address bar gets smaller vertically. I enabled Nova, I notice the tab bar/title bar is a bit larger vertically now? Everything always becomes a waste of space.
